Help me update my wardrobe

So I need some new clothes, basically everything. Shirts, pants, shoes.

Post up ideas (with links if possible).

i am 29, so I like to look like i am in my 20s still (because I am!)

I need some casual stuff, casual dressy, and maybe a couple of dressier outfits for going out. More casual stuff though. I need ideas of all types.

Help me out fashion gurus!

budget isn't much of a concern, I'd like to keep it under $1000 total if possible, but am flexible.

It really helps to know your ethnicity/skin tone and what kinda scenes you hang out in... ANY article of clothing -regardless of how expensive/ what brand/ how nice- is a big waste of $ and will make you look dumb if it doesn't fit your style and personality.

Just for example, I'm a pale white dude who plays lotsa sports (grad student now)...
I wore baggy skater clothes and logo tees early in high school, then prepped it up a bit later in HS and in undergrad (RL, A&F, etc). Around the start of grad school, I dabbled in the Eurotrash high end stuff like Armani button-down shirts, tighter jeans, etc a bit. That was a big mistake and a terrible waste of $... esp because that stuff is built for rail skinny guys and not guys who lift and are average to muscular. You might have to play around a bit, but try everything on and don't buy on impulse... that's how you learn I guess, but also how you waste tons of $.

Now, I've gone basically full circle back to the prep style I guess: polo shirts or button down dress-type shirts mostly with some tee shirts mixed in some days too. I keep the jeans or khakis relaxed though, because that's just what I find comfortable. Bold solid darker colors are best for my skin tone, and I stick 90% to black, white, blue, gray and maybe deep green.

I really love the button down dress shirts, both vertical striped and solid colors (and wrinkle-free is KEY). They go fine with jeans for going to school or casual... I wear em untucked and with the sleeves rolled up and it looks good. You can also wear em tucked, nicely pressed, buttoned up to near the top, and sleeve cuffs down with a pair of slacks and look slick at out at the clubs or combo em with a tie for business situations. It's a flexible style that fits for me, I guess.

I think my favorite brands right now are JCrew, RL Polo, Claiborne, Kenneth Cole, Lacoste, and Tommy Hil. I shop online, Younkers, JCPenny, TJMaxx, etc. Classic whiteboy rich look I guess, but it's classic for a reason... it doesn't go out of style and it looks good. I still mix in some Adidas or Nike stuff too so that my style stays athletic, because that's basically me.

You pretty much just covered every genre of style, I'm with you on that

Start off with some basics a classic tees, couple of polos, some button downs, 2 pairs of jeans , slacks , and khakis - Get bas colors for most but improve the cut and fabric quality of these. Going a little dressier than normal in each category improves your wardrobe greatly. It gives you room to to throw in some casual variety since you are starting with a higher end base wardrobe. Also try not to get one shirt you like in like 50 different colors. Vary it up - If you see a shirt in blue in a polo style , get the red one by the same designer in a button down. This changes it up a little but keeps you with a certain style you like. Name brands are not the end all be all, but better fabrics do cost more money and they wear longer, and fade and shrink less, so you may need to spend some money for some of the items. Shoes/sneakers are important so have at least for non work related - 1 dress pair, 1 dinner pair, 1 mall/movie pair, 1 beat around, 1 bar pair. - Jeans - you can get the same style in 2 different colors (blue), but thats it. Try to have at a minimum 4 pairs of great jeans, and 2 pairs of ok jeans, Also 2 pairs of black jeans on top of all the blues. Khakis and dress pants other than work outfits - at least 3 of each.....Thats a basic start - build upon it and you will feel great.

holy shit man, I appreciate the feedback, but what kind of budget do yout hink you'd need for all of that?

Here is what I want to try to get:

2-3 long sleeve t-shirt with print design/style
2-3 short sleeve t- shirts
2 button down long sleeve
1-2 button down short sleeve
1-2 pairs of jeans
3 pairs of work slacks
4-5 button down dress shirts for work (to go with the slacks)
shoes
belt

how much should i budget? $2000? more?

generally - like 1500 would do it, but you can be thrifty and spend less, especially if as things go on sale. A dept store like Macy's, or even Lord & Taylor will mark things down rather quickly just to go through ther stock. And stores like The Gap or Banana Republic generally have things on sale after bieng in the store for 1 1/2 months. - On-line usually gives you some more options as well, especially if you are true to your size with clothes, and do not need to try much on.
