help me find a good laptop

lavi

New member
Just finished HS, im off to college next year and will need a laptop! I want to find one ~$2000.

Should I go for a smaller more convenient one, or a faster bulkier one? I heard that Compaq (which is HP) and fujitsu break easily. Anything else to avoid?

Any specific model suggestions would be appreciated.

Btw I'm lavi, you guys may not recognize me cause I'm not a post whore ;)

thanks. truth is, im not sure how much ill carry it around. that's part of what I'm asking you guys what most people do in college. I figure I'll take it to the library and stuff and maybe class, and generally wanna get out of my microscopic dorm room. But then again if I'm carrying it in a case does it really matter?

size doesnt mattter really since they are all pretty small 5 pounds and 2.5 pounds isnt a big difference

dont worry about size go for performance

Dell Toshiba or IBM for quality and price

Sony Vaio for light weight and small size

And yes, carry around 6-7 lbs vs 3-4lbs for 30 min or more and you will feel a difference

and when do u ever carry a computer for 40 mins straight?

Our shop uses Dell exclusively, never had a problem with them.

In the field we use Itronix.

Some of us only get paid like once or twice a year.

Dell is fine....as long as you don't have to call New Delhi for service. Their ratings on service, which used to be the highest, have plummeted in the last year or two. Compaq is a total piece of shit. My most recent laptop is a toshiba with a 17 inch screen. It's the best machine I've owned, top-rated service.

Very important to figure out what kind of mouse you like. I'm partial to IBMs because I like the little eraser head mouse pointer. I can't stand the touchpads where you have to drag your finger. You'll pay a premium for light weight and get less durability, so if you're just going to use it on the couch/bed go for a heavier one.

I vote for an IBM Thinkpad. They're reliable, and you'll get a native English speaker if you have to call for support. And the Trackpoint pointing device is brilliant, far superior to the touchpads on other laptops.

ibm is best IMO but pricey, along with sony on the $$$.. I have a new dell lappy and a powerbook... I like the apple better in all honestly, namely for the fact that OSX is 10x more stable than any version of windows will ever be.

thanks guys. i didn't even think to look at ibm, looks like they've got good stuff and are cheaper than sony.

my friend has an apple and it's great, but life is just easier if you have microsoft since everyone else does :P
