Help me build my first sniper riffle

manny78

Plat Hero
Platinum
I'm looking to build my first sniper riffle ever. I have many weapons and this one lacks my collection.

SO here's the deal:

- MUST be .308 caliber

- bolt actions only, no semi-auto

- maximum 3000$US scope not included

I dont mind buying parts from different sources/companies (receiver, barrel......)

Check out the Sauer 202 I'm pretty sure the make a tactical model (probably not that same number though).

These things shoot sub MOA right out of the box and you can swap out the barrels for different calibers.

If that doesn't float your boat,a pre '64 Winchester and have it blueprinted and set up for precision shooting.

Either of the 2 should be less than 3 grand, the Sauer would be cheaper and IMO a better choice.

From reading your posts, you know not to skimp on the optics.

can't go wrong with the reminton 700 SDM. AWESOME action and proven accuracy.

Leopold scope...any of them are good

Get your synthetic stock customized....I know a good guy out of Pembroke, Ont. if you want a hook-up.

Guards;Only problem with the Rem is that it is push feed vs the controlled round feed of the Win.

Albeit the chance of a failure to feed is small w/ the push feed,it is next to nil w/ the CRF.To me very important in a tactical arm.

this one perhaps ? http://www.sigarms.com/products/sauer-ssg3000.asp

This is just for recreation right? A 50 Caliber would be better in the damage category if you are going for mechanical targets! I'm not up to snuff with Canadian gun laws! They may have special permits like the states! Otherwise my mouth is sealed!

I have a Remington PSS (.308) in an Accuracy International Chassis System, and I love it! Shoots sub-moa all day with 168 grain Federal GMM, and even with a Mark 4 Leupold it came in well under 3 grand.
Plus, I find that the AICS is the most comfortable stock I've ever used, particularly while in the prone position.
It is an awesome system with many benefits.

Remington .308P, Tasco mildot SS (super sniper) 20 power, Haris swivel bipod.

Whole thing should be less than 1000 bucks and will nail the target out to 1500 meters all day long.

For practicality standpoints the 50 is much to big for mot urban environments. If you are shooting over 1500 meters then I would recommend it.

Personally, I would get a Lazzaroni custom .308 for this purpose. I got their standard .308 last year, their "War Bird" model, and it rocks. The only problem is the price of the ammo. The War Bird ammo goes for about $110 per box. It will only fire War Bird rounds. You can not substitute any other .308 round in it. It is really worth it as far as accuracy and distance goes. The bullit is traveling over 4000fps when it leaves the barrel. Check out lazzaroni.com for more specifics on the rifle. I think I spelled lazzaroni right, but if not just do a search and you will find it.

Hey manny,

I know someone who does custom sniper rifles, right out of pembroke. He is the BEST in the business. Shoot me a PM if you are interested...he'll custom EVERYTHING for you, including the stock to your measurements. He did mine :) Great and interesting guy too.

When the green light was given to take the shot on a man that had held his family at gunpoint the reply was

"CANCELLING CHRISTMAS"

OK, here comes the real advice!...Get a Remington 700 action. Have the bolt sleeved and the action blue printed. Throw a Timney or Jewel trigger in it. As far as barrels go I would go with a Hart or Krieger. Put it in either a McMillan or HS Precision stock. Go with a Ken Farrel Base and rings, or Badger Ordinance. I live a half hour from a guy that makes THE best guns out there. He is building them for the US team. He specializes in target rifles and makes a lot of 1000 yard match rifles. If you can get a 700 action before the introduction of the "J" lock. If not it can be modified. Scopes??? Hmmm, if you want the high end shit go with a Nightforce or Zeiss.

Perfect.
(I would opt for Badger Ord w/ Zeiss myself)

Barret M82 and McMillian tactical are banned here. These were the two .50 I was considering...

MP5's advice, McMillian Bros, Lazzaroni, Guards and others..... damn it's hard to chose one..... !!!!!!!

I would also go with Zeiss for the optics. I am proud to say that every rifle I own has a Zeiss scope on it. Just FYI, a friend of mine was on a Dawls sheep hunt in Alaske and dropped one in it's tracks from a little over 500yds with his custom Lazzaroni warbird. Truly an awesome rifle.

The PSS is a good base for sure.

before you drop 3 grand like I did a year ago on a "sniper gun" you need to be sure you understand the basics behind shooting. I've been shooting for years, mainly DCM Ar-15 matches. I spent 3 grand on a a gun built on a per-64 action, McMillen, Timmey, all the goodies and I couldn't shoot much tighter groups that I could with my Rem-700 .300 Sendero deer gun. I thought a fancy gun would make me shoot 3" groups at 600yrds+. I don't know how advanced you are with hand loading and ect, but I learned that unless you have the time to really practice with several different hand loads, powders, bullet weight, chrongraphs, etc, having a fancy gun like that isn't worth the money other that it looks cool. Are you shooting matches or do you just want a cool looking 'sniper gun'?

Yeah,I went through the same thing after I put together several rifles.

Until you can tailor a load specifically for THAT rifle you'll not see great accuracy with factory ammo.

shooting matches and yes, I do handloading for both handguns and rifles' caliber.

If you got the time to work with several different loads with countless combo's then go for it. I just don't want you to make the same mistake I did and find out that 3k isn't really worth a 1/2" better group than your cheap Savage Tactical will shoot. (which are great guns by the way)

Good luck and if you need any advice feel free to ask, though it seems like you know what you are doing..
