Help! I Think I Tore My Shoulder.

Ok here's the deal. 5 Months ago I was doing underhand pull-ups in my apartment when my son ran and jumped on me as I was half way pulling up.

It didn't hurt at the time but a couple days later I noticed the pain. I didn't think much of it because I've had similar injuries before that go away in a few days, or a few weeks at most.

Well its been 5 months now and it still hurts when I try to extend my arm vertically from the ground straight out to the side.

It doesn't hurt unless I make this specific motion. I cant tell if its hurting on the outside of my arm where the muscles meet at the point or if its more towards the front.

I have been lifting 3 days a week over the past 5 months with emphasis on the triceps and biceps but it doesn't hurt unless I specifically raise my arm out.

I work as a freelance web designer and don't have insurance (and with the economy barley can pay the bills) so going to the doctor is not an option at this point, it would take several months for me to save up enough money to visit one.

My question is should I be scared? Is this too long for a muscle to be hurt? Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? Ice? Make a homemade sling?

I tried to not use it as much as possible but there is always a situation where it got agitated (such as shutting the tailgate on my ford explorer.)

I'm assuming that these times are the reasons the healing was prolonged. I get two different answers from people that seems to be the opposite advice so it makes no sense to me.

One guy will say to put it in a sling and ice it, and it will be healed in a month. Another person will say to use it with light bands at the gym so that it will rebuild.

The past few days I've been lifting it a few times a day to try and "build" it. I doubt I could use bands yet as it still hurts when I just raise it alone.

I'm really scared of this guys. I have been lifting for 2 years now trying to reach that "plateau" before I jump into anabolic and take my physique to the next level. Now with this injury I fear I will never be able to build my right shoulder to an aesthetically pleasing circumference as I hear war stories of people being screwed forever after such an injury.

Does anyone have experience with this type of injury? And are there any people that could lead the way on how to get this sucker healed?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

what urs internal...external range of motion like? can you raise your arm straight out front? out to the side? across your chest? and straight overhead?

doctors are still looking for that magic pill that will reattach ligaments to bone. Hate to say it but something sounds torn. Muscles shouldn't hurt that long. I'm three months post surgery on a rotator and slap tear.

yeah i agree with above....but it could still be a torn muscle but it would have to be a complete tear or extreme tear. It leads me to a ligament problem due to the lack of range of motion out to the side and lifting it upwards. im sorry to say but i really do suggest u get an MRI. it will give u a starting point of where to start with rehab. once u get a starting point...i can help u completely rebuild ur shoulder starting with the COMPLETE basics up to getting back into lifting heavier weight. If you have a torn rotator cuff..it can take up to a full year to get back ur total range of motion and strenght. DO NOT let all this discourage you!

i got another question...what about when u position ur arms overhead...elbows bent at 90 degrees as if you were to do a dumbell shoulder press...can you fully extend your arms???

Ya I can do the whole motion. It only hurts at the very top when I extend my arms fully above me. It feels like it hurts at the bottom of the "V" down in between the bicep and tricep, but only in the front.

well to me thats a lil funny but the arm extended out to ur side and not being able to raise it...thats rotator cuff more than likely.

Honestly your best bet is to see a doctor ASAP.

Yes....agreed. if you wait toooooo long u can get frozen shoulder..dont freakin want that. i have rehabed quite a bit of shoulders..some post surgery...pre surgery...and some not needing surgery. ive taken a frozen shoulder and make it mobile and brought strength back...shoulder problems sucka dick. They are involved in alot of upper body movement! SEE a doctor bro..its pretty important that u do!
