Has anyone on here ever owned a VW Cabrio?

I doubt any guy here would admit to owning a Cabrio, Miata, or S2000. You might as well remove your seat and sit directly onto a huge dildo.

My mom had one over 10 years ago.

the ultimate chick/old lady car.

Yes, but I drove it to pic up girls when I was in high school.

It was the old style of vw, but it had the white out package on it.

My little neighbor turns 16 next April. I have the chance to purchase a 2001 Cabrio with 19,000 original miles on it for $1500. It would make a good first car for him to putter to school, the skateboard park and the beach in.

Just wanted to know how dependable and mechanically sound they were.

$1500???

How are you getting such a good deal.

My family had 3 or 4 VW's. None of them had any mechanical issues. Great car for a first car!

It was a weekend car my boss bought for his wife and she never drove it. He was going to donate it to charity but they would only give him $1000 for it. ($600 as some deduction and then he claimed the remaining $400 under another thing). So I offered him $1500 for it and he said why not. Just want to find out how good they are and if the ride is ok.

I would buy it right away.

It does have a stiff suspension. But, it rides good, reliable, good gas milage, and should score him some girls!

My mom had one of the older style ones with the 4 round headlamps and it was a great car. I know VW's tend to have some electrical issues that are kind of pricey and that the early 00's had some issues. Maybe check consumer reports?

That is true.

We had an alternater go bad. Cost about $400 to fix.

But, I know you think he should buy it if it is only $1500. Right?

I don't want to pay $1500 for it and later have to spend $1000 on repairs.

How are the tops? Reliable? Keep the A/C inside?

My mom's was fine as far as the top and a/c went.

find out if their is a local repair shop (non-dealer) that services VWs in your area, if so - it will be fine.

Otherwise I would pass.

yep, plus I'm thinking about the 16 year olds parents, are they cool with the whole deal? I assume that they would be on the hook for the repairs....

If his Mom could afford the repairs, she could afford the car. But that isn't the case. And if I gave it to him I would feel terrible if he got stuck with a repair bill 3 months down the road.

that's kinda what I'm thinking to Bro, your a hell-of-a-guy to even give a damn, but you would have to have a local mechanic that could work on it for atleast the same money as an American made car or it may not be such a good deal. But cars are expensive to have work done on in any case, foreign or not...
