AAP said:My little neighbor turns 16 next April. I have the chance to purchase a 2001 Cabrio with 19,000 original miles on it for $1500. It would make a good first car for him to putter to school, the skateboard park and the beach in.
Just wanted to know how dependable and mechanically sound they were.
all the whey said:$1500???
How are you getting such a good deal.
My family had 3 or 4 VW's. None of them had any mechanical issues. Great car for a first car!
AAP said:It was a weekend car my boss bought for his wife and she never drove it. He was going to donate it to charity but they would only give him $1000 for it. ($600 as some deduction and then he claimed the remaining $400 under another thing). So I offered him $1500 for it and he said why not. Just want to find out how good they are and if the ride is ok.

AAP said:I don't want to pay $1500 for it and later have to spend $1000 on repairs.
How are the tops? Reliable? Keep the A/C inside?
MightyMouse69 said:find out if their is a local repair shop (non-dealer) that services VWs in your area, if so - it will be fine.
Otherwise I would pass.
txbondsman said:yep, plus I'm thinking about the 16 year olds parents, are they cool with the whole deal? I assume that they would be on the hook for the repairs....
AAP said:If his Mom could afford the repairs, she could afford the car. But that isn't the case. And if I gave it to him I would feel terrible if he got stuck with a repair bill 3 months down the road.
