It is pathetic that this officer could even be put on trial for doing his job. Cops can no longer do their job well because they have to walk around on egg shells worrying about bullshit like this.

The man was threatening police, got dangerously close, and therefore was shot. I think the policeman made the right decision.

Being deaf and mute has no effect on my thoughts on this case. I think mentally retarded, deaf, mute, etc should all be tried in the same fashiion as everyone else and should also be put to death if that is their punishment.

Special treatment in our justice system is pathetic.

They're alowed to shoot if thier lives are in danger. Of course this is a judgement call and in the heat of a tense situation the thought process might move faster than comprehension. This leads to flawed decisions. Give a man the right to kill if HE feels his life is in danger and he will almost always take advantage of these powers...regerdless if his life actually was in jepordy. I wasn't there so I can't make a judgement call on whether or not the shooting was justified. The man wasn't wielding your typical choice of weapon...That further complicates things.

There are too many facts that I do not know on this one but mentally retarded people SHOULD NOT be tried the same as someone who is competent to stand trial. BO-CEPHUS the cops know that their every move is scrutinized so IF THEY TAKE THE JOB BE PREPARED TO FACE THE MUSIC WHEN YOU DISCHARGE YOUR WEAPON, RIGHT OR WRONG !! If you cannot make split second decisions then you are in the wrong DAMN PROFESSION SO FIND SOMETHING MORE SUITABLE !! UNDERPAID, STRESSFUL SITUATIONS, ALL THESE THINGS ADD UP TO PROBLEMS AND TIME BOMBS WAITING TO GO OFF............theres a blue bird on my shoulder can I kill it???? not everyone is up to the job and MANY SHOULD NEVER EVER GET THE CHANCE FOR THE PUBLICS SAFETY!!

I will agree that some cops are not up for the job and should never be their in the first place. Howevery, I do believe if someone is threatening a policeman with any type of weapon, they deserve to be put down.

I will never agree and you cannot say anything that will change my mind about putting the mentally retarded on trial for their crimes.

hmm

one side of me sees cearly the guy made threating moves to another officer, the guy refused to put the rake down and in doing so was basically setting himself up to be shot.

the other side says why did it need to be fatal. fine, people have said ion here before abaout shooting the centre of mass....a shot to the stomach? still, he protected his partner and as such he shouldn't be done for manslaughter. also this is bad PR for the police, they need recruits. the same os true of other prfessions like doctors etc. they are only humans. split second descisions can go wrong. its only if the officer did smething neglegent (like not tell the dude to put the rake down) that he should be prosectuted.

ooohh...an iron rake. What's next? A push-broom shooting? Or how about the headline "Cops kill man brandishing featherduster"

Gimme a fuckin break. The cops could have waited this one out, or used about 1000 different means to subdue this guy. If it took an hour to wait it out, so what? If they weren't there, they would be writing traffic tickets somewhere.

I generally give the cops some leeway for doing the greater good, but if I were a juror, this guy would be going away.

BPB - you said you left some facts out.......

You're saying regardless of the condition and circumstances involved, put an unstable person on trial? Someone who cannot comprehend the act that occurred? that kind of "thinking" doesn't even dignify a debatable response.

You are correct.

I often wonder about that too, it seems to happen quite often, usually though it seems to be double digit gunshots to ONE individual. Most cops are sharpshooters...( especially at close range ) so why not just drill him in the legs or shoulders.....if the assailant is PCP'd or coked up, you still have 12 in the clip.....

What happened to the parents...

The way I understand the top post is ...he was attacking his mother and father???.

What happened to them? Did the police take them to safety and at any point did they tell the police he was mute.....

Looks like a neighbor would have told one of the policemen if he indeed was mute (someone had to make the domestic violence call). And instead of being shot, he could have been tranquilized.

Not enough facts to know anything for sure.
