Guinness Black & Tan question

Can you successfully make a black & tan using bottled beer? I understand you're supposed to do it with nitrogen enriched draft beer.

your best bet is the canned guinness. i have made black and tans with the canned guinness before as well as made them straight out of the tap. tap works MUCH better, canned works pretty decent, but sloppier. i did pour it over a spoon when making them from a can.

only thing you can do is try, but without that nitrogen, you're probably SOL. if it does work, however, lemme know.

canned Guinness has the ping pong balls (or did they switch to having it set in the bottom of the can? can't remember which was the old and which was the new).

can't really do that with the bottle though. at least i havn't seen it done.

yeah, but you gotta pour the guiness over a spoon over the cup. Try it.

tuc, you talkin about the extra extra stout in the bottle? the stuff that's thicker than syrup?

that stuff is goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood :p :p :p

once i had that, the regular guinness (stuff in the can) tasted like water.

ps... guiness is weak, percentage wise.. u guys know that? My heart was broken for a few days...

i know. sad, isn't it?

i guess the up-side to that is that you can drink a lot more of it before you get really drunk.

Weak percent wise but still gets me drunker faster then any other beer,8 cans and I am fucked beyond belief,I blame the nitrogen

please explain wtf u are talking about everyone!

you need to know what a black and tan is?

simple. it's 2 beers in one.

guinness is propelled with nitrogen. if it's availible on tap in a bar, they actually use a different nozzle on the tap. IIRC - the holes are really small. in any case, since it's being propelled by nitrogen and not CO2, it's density is lighter. this allows it to "sit" on top of other beers. (did the best i can explaining this, might not be 100% correct, but should be close)

when you have a bartender make a black and tan, they will take a light beer (isn't it typically Bass? can't remember) and fill the glass half way. then they will drape a spoon over the glass (upside down) and pour the guinness directly onto the spoon. you will have your light beer in the bottom of the glass, guinness on the top. black on top, tan on the bottom, Black & Tan.

when drinking, it will stay like that throughout the entire glass unless you agitate it enough to mix them or you suck all the guinness off the top first. you get to drink 2 beers at once, and you get the combined taste of both.

i actually liked using Sierra Nevada Pale Ale on the bottom. i liked the green bitterness of it with the smoothness of the Guinness. don't know why though.

there's another way they do this, might be a Snakebite, can't remember. it's a cider and Guinness together. they mix though, no separation. rich, thick, and sweet. that might be a Smoothie....damn it's been too long since i've been to a decent bar.

understand now?
