I stuck around after my speach class today to chat with the professor. The discussion was in regards to a presentation my group had done about different factors affecting undergraduate admissions, many of which are based upon race. My teacher, a black lady, professed her concerns regarding race-based admissions and programs that support the advancement of minorities at the expense of others.
Her main point was that too often, race is equated to culture, where this is not necessarily the case. It was her opinion that any support given in the admissions process should be to impoverished children, not just black or Hispanic or whatever race. We agreed that the solution to race problems in the US is due in large part to the consistant labeling that occurs. If, for example, we did not refer to ourselves as white men, black men, or Hispanic men; and as merely men, much of our problems would be resolved.
I am convinced that the only way to improve race relations in the US is to educate children as to how trivial skin color is. We also need to choose appropriate leaders for all ethnic communities who do make good roll models, and who will work to break down existing barriers.
Btw, did you hear the religious fanatic who will be responsible for America's downfall will be the most popular halloween costume this year?
