I got a new job where I have to work from 9 PM to 5 Am...

How long would it take for my biologiccal clock to adjust to the new schedule?

I get home at 5:30 AM and try to sleep till 11 AM.

ANyone here working only graveyard shift?

I am having a hard time adjusting myself to this graveyard shift.

We had to work rotating shifts years ago where I worked at & 3rd shift was definitely the worst one for me. I never could adjust to the time change. Our shift was 11pm - 730am. Talk about brain dead! Alot of guys would tell stories of how they would catch themselves dozing off while driving home. Those 2 weeks would fuck me up bad. I was a walking zombie most of the time. We asked management if we could make a trade with somebody on a different shift who might like 3rd but of course they would always say no. Pricks. Never were any bosses there so we always made beer runs & smoked weed like crazy but it still sucked major donkey balls. No shit bro, I hated that shift with a passion as did most guys. It's a tough adjustment to make. IMO, it'll make an old man out of you fast....but like I said that's just my opinion & I know I don't speak for everybody.

like DB said, you never really adjust. I work graveyard right now, like pretty rough labor from 10:00 to 7:30 or so. i do that 4 days a week and go to school fulltime. it sucks because those 3 days i have off i stay awake in the day and sleep at night, so my body never get's used to either....sucks pretty bad

I work continental shifts,2 weeks days 2 nights, and my schedule is week1 mon, tue, fri, sat, sun 7-7 pm or am week 2 wed thur

I find the best thing to do on days you work is just go right to bed after a meal when you get home and get as much sleep as possible, you never fully adjust but it gives ya enough sleep to get through the day

keep yourself away from sunlight if at all possible, and certainly dont sleep with any light around you. you cant undo 100,000 years of sleeping when the sunlight is not present and waking when it is. circadian rhythms are nothing to play with.

couple of questions for you:

1. is this M-F or everyday?
2. do you have $90 for some ambien? (for as needed)
3. do you have access to a place with no sunlight?

i too work this shift (but im still full time student), and i work in a sleep diagnostic lab.

I often go to bed at 5am due to work, kinda crappy, also have workem in my house at 9am for the next few weeks..........that is gonna be a lot of fun.

11-7am is my current shift. i go to bed @ 8ish wake up around 4 eat a snack then off to the gym. its really not that taxing if you have your "plan" in order. i also got a script for ambien as needed.

I used to work 11-7am also, and it definately wouldve been doable if I had my own car and food available at the time. The first time I did this shift I lost 30lbs of hard earned size and was down from 185 to 151 from missing meals. Then years later I did the shift again, but only a few days a week and was still making good progress in the gym. I would bring 64oz of milk with me to the job, and get in a big meal before getting to the job. I basically live on this schedule regardless of work or not, and Ive grown off of it for years. I dont have to adjust to it however since it seems to be my natural schedule. Id have to adjust majorly to sleeping at night and waking up in the morning however.
