Grants Available for Small Business Start Ups?

I'm trying to start a small business, but I'm running into the problem of not having enough capital to start. I don't own a house or car. I don't outright own something of enough value to offer a bank collateral. I'm trying to obtain approximately 50K. I've been told there are grants available to people in my situation. I've searched on the net, but most places end up trying to get me to buy some book or "guide" that will direct me to the grants I'm looking for. Does anyone have experience in this situation? Can anyone recommend one of these "guides" that they have experience with? All advice is greatly appreciated.

You main source of information on this would be the SBA. They would have all the information, etc. at their fingertips. That's what they're there for.

The rest..like you said...are just scam-artists. Almost as bad as those "patent it for you" guys.

unless you're a minority or a woman, don't waste your time the SBA wont give you shit...

also, their loans range from 10-25$K especially when you have nothing to back the loan with...

remember, the new budget cust will slow down US business growth like never before.
