And I recommend it highly.

"The House of God"

By Samuel Shem, M.D.

A book about the horror of an interns first year out of med school. A good read for anyone considering medicine as a career. It's an older book (written in 1978) but the same principles apply today.

tell me some things that stood out... I was always interested with how people can sustain that kind of alifestyle?

The book makes a point to show the reader that a young intern is not going to be the life saving hero that the laymen would consider a doctor to be. The vast majority of the patients are old demented patients who are called gomers (for get out of my emergency room) who are too sick to be in a nursing home but not sick enough to warrant medical care at a hospital. Thus the majority of the interns time is spent trying to TURF (transfer) the patient to another ward so he doesn't have to deal with it.

It also goes into depth the ass kissing required by the interns and residents to the higher ups in order to secure more lucrative positions. These higher ups are out of touch with reality and have lost a certain humanity to the professionilism that the trade requires.

All in all it takes an extremely cynical view of the profession. I am considering a path in medicine and after reading this book I'm not so sure anymore. I plan on asking some of my family (who are docs) about the accuracy of the book.

My buddy is going into med school. I'm thinking about getting or recommending this book to him.

Should I? or would it just kill his drive to becoming a doctor?

Nah, have him read it. It's a good reality check and a prep for what is coming in his future.

Any tit pics from hot nurses?

Yea I think he would enjoy it for sure. Kill his drive? Well, I doubt it would do that, hell it really depends on why he is going into it. My motivations would primarily be financial and that is why I am looking in to my other options and learning as much as I can about the profession.
