Yeah I got my hands on a pre release final copy. Great things have actually been said about it so far...Supposed to be real stable, and efficient, customizable, etc...Going to partition my drive and play around with it....I'll let ya know whats up and take a screenshot of the desktop.

We have tested it in my lab at work. Despite what they say, the performance isn't quite there yet. And it looks very cartoony. Catering to the generally idiotic computer illiterate public.

im sticking to win 98 and windows millenium

Ahhh!! Windows Millennium sucks! No joke, I installed it a few months ago and UNINSTALLED it within half an hour of having it in. It dropped my Quake3 FPS down to 30fps even on the lowest settings when I had over 70fps in Win98 with the higher end settings. WinME is awful. I'd have to say Win2k Professional is the best I've seen so far.

My friend was in the XP beta and claims that the OS rules, but as karde said, too cartoony and user-friendly to my liking.

hmmm

a friend got XP too

they trying to be like macintosh too much

anyway it fucked up on him but i thinkn it was beacuse his 14 days ran out :)

i dont trust any release of microsoft as they always release second editions etc. win98 SE is good :p

I have the cracked winxp rc2 and it's running a hell of a lot better than rc1 did. I haven't tried to lock it yet to see how stable it is compared to win2k but it seems comparible. It installed all of my drivers except my nic card which was nice. The GUI is kinda wierd but trust me it grows on you. WPM 8 is really cool also. I think you'll like it

well i have Win98 on my PCs Windows ME on my laptop.

i don't play games on my laptop so i have nothing to worry about.

XP for kids

XP does look like it was made for little kids. It will crash once a week or once every other week like all Windows OS. Really win2k is teh best OS Microsoft has put out. Its going to be fun hearing all the system admins bitching about working with XP instead of 2000.

... been running XP beta as a primary OS all summer. It's stable as hell and is a good upgrade from win2000. Don't underestimate it!

The future is with Unix/Linux core. Period.
Nah, it won't be. Probably should be, but it won't. It's all about that thing called advertising. Linux has virtually none. And until Linux starts becoming bundled as the standard os in pre packaged cmoputers from dell and gateway for the average joe shmoe that doesn't know anything about computers, and until computer games start to become more widely written to be used with windows, Linux will remain where it's at.

XP will never take off.. its coming out too soon after windows 2000... Microsoft orginally thought win 2k would be adopted much faster than it actually has.. most shops are still 95/98/NT 4.0... where i work we are just starting our Win2k migration, there is no way we are switch to XP any time soon.. and for the most part, XP is a cosmetic upgrade.

Not exactly true that it's a cosmetic upgrade. They rewrote quite a bit of the core code. We did a lot of testing at AMD on it, for some perfomance analysis. It has performance kinks to work out of it still.

Could you explain why?

People have no need for a unix/linux desktop configuration. We can do everything on windows. Running linux on an x configuration is no more stable or faster than windows. Infact it's slower depending on what gui you have and what you are doing. It’s far too difficult for the average user to understand/configure, and that will never change no matter how easy they try to make. Unless you are talking about server side situations... yes unix and linux have that market over windows depending on what it's being used for. NT/2000 dominates business server in corps, Unix dominates larger cluster servers and large area networks etc... But with ASP growing a LOT of servers are moving to 2000. I just switched my web servers over from unix to 2000 for ASP.,,,, linux/unix is not the future of desktop OS. Windows is industry standard. It's what people know, and what people can provide support for.

You guys will like XP. There is a big difference from 2000. It really fills the gaps where 2000 missed and this upgrade will be necessary if you want the full functionality of a windows operated OS.

karde: you are very correct.... A lot of changes were made to the kernel/core on windows XP.

XP is much more of an upgrade than most people can understand.
