going hypo from insulin, my experiences...

I've used humalog many times in the past, and never had any signs of going hypo. A few weeks ago I started a different approach; post workout shooting humalog, then 2 hours later, just as the peak starts to drop, I hit it again only with humalin r this time. Its worked great as I'm making awesome gains, but I've had two episodes where I could feel myself going hypo.
Both times were many hours after the shot, right around the time I was due to eat again (I've been eating every 1 1/2 hours) The signs were shakiness, i started sweating and felt very flushed, and the onset was pretty quick

Both times I followed the same approach, hit some quick sugar, usually chocolate, then downed most of a can of pepsi, and both times I felt fine 5 minutes later, and hit up my next meal.

I think as long as you are aware of the signs, and what to do when you feel them, then its not that big a deal. Thats why I posted this, for anyone using slin, if you feel anything remotely close to that, make sure you get some simple carbs right away

I can't agree with this enough...

Doctors at one time treated various psychological disorders by inducing glycemic shock via insulin dosage... the resulting coma left some cured, and others mentally incapacitated.

Don't do this to yourself.

If you're on slin:
1 - Make sure you eat frequent meals reasonably high in carbohydrates, both simple and complex.
2 - Carry some sort of simple sugars with you at ALL times (they actually sell a sucrose-based gum for diabetics at most drug stores).
3 - At the FIRST signs that you might be going hypo, ingest your sugars. It's better to freak out and not go into shock than it is to delay 5 minutes and hit the deck (or worse).

From a biochemical standpoint, slin use has very rich rewards, but it's extremely dangerous if you don't do it correctly.

Karma to needsize for his post.

Buy a glucose monitor and check your blood sugar levels.

Slin can and will kill ya if not done properly.

exactly, great info. Myself, I started at a low dose, and am working my way up, am making sure I eat every 1 1/2 hours, and I've been staying home close to the food as well, just in case. if I do go out, i will bring something with me as its not worth taking the chance. Insulin is awesome, and can be done safely, but you MUST do your homework. If i didnt know what was going on tonight it could have killed me

Oral Glucose is best. That is what Paramedics carry and use when they arrive on scene to someone in a hypoglycemic state. It is (should be) available at drugstores. Trade names include Glutose and Insta-Glucose. It is a gel which dissolves and is rapidly absorbed when "squirted" into the mouth. One toothpaste-type tube = one dose.

I felt fine 5 minutes later

I have also started going hypo on two different occasions. Only it took almost 30min to feel normal again both times and I consumed sugar immediately. Shitty feeling but its symptoms are hard to miss.

The thing is, if you're prepared you correct hypoglycemia.

What the hell are you going to do if you overdo the DNP?

My guess would be die :D

and if you read the post, it was after talking to my doctor that I dropped my carbs that low, with humalog, and never had a problem. Its much easier to control sides with humalog as its such a short peak. The amount of carbs a diabetic will consume in glucose tabs is about 1/5 the amount I used at my lowest, so I was not doing anything dangerous. It only sounds dangerous on a bodybuilding board where everyone is just repeating what they read posted once, not when you actually consult a physician.

I am eating over 300 carbs spaced over meals taken every 1 1/2 hours while the insulin is active in my system, but if you are in a peak and the complex carbs havent converted to glucose, then you can go hypo, so I do know exactly what I am doing. As for cutting back, I started 3 weeks ago running 4iu per shot, and have worked my way up to 10iu, so its not like I just jumped into everything. Like anything you need to find out how your body reacts to things, and there is NO safer way to run insulin than I have been doing for the past 3 weeks

For what its worth, heres my current insulin/meal schedule:

4:30pm, get home from the gym, inject 10iu humalog, then have a shake with 60 grams of dextrose, 40 grams whey

5:00pm 1/2 container cottage cheese with oatmeal (50 carbs)

6:30 inject 10iu humalin r, eat large chicken breast, 2 large baked potatoes, and large glass skim milk

8:00 1/2 container cottage cheese, 2 sandwiches on large kaiser buns

9:30 1/2 container cottage cheese, 1 large sandwhich

11:30 whey shake with skim milk

The two times that I felt hypo, were both just prior to 8pm, looking at the schedule it looks like the 6:30 meal hasnt converted to glucose, so today I added some simple carbs to that meal as well, and no sides what so ever

How is the fat gain with such low carb amounts?

fat gain seems minimal, too be honest I didnt think that carbs were low, it works out to around 300 carbs or more in the evening, with 100-150 before my workout, which makes for a lot of carbs in one day
