glasses vs. contacts

My vision is not that bad I think its at 20/75, which means I can see fine at a close range, but have trouble seeing things at a certain distance. I've been using glasses for a couple of years. At first I just wore them while driving or the movies or a ball game, but then my doctor told me that the more I wore them, the stronger it made my eyes and it would be helpful. Well, that sack of shit was wrong and wearing them all the time only made my eyes more dependant on them and so I found myself having to wear them all the time. I recentlly got contacts, I'm trying out the 30 day/30 night disposables. I find that although they do help alot, they are not as clear/sharp as my glasses and everything has a slight blurryness to it, I need to look at things for a second or two and then they'll sharpen up. I'm not sure if this is something that happens at first, as your eyes get used to the contacts or is it something that most people experience. I also have slight atigmatism that the contacts seem to make worse at night. Unfortunately, the doc told me that there is nothing they can do for the astigmatism and that is a compromise I will have to make if I want to continue using them.

Please share your comments/experience with using contacts over glasses. Also, I know that Lasik is out there, but it's not something I can afford at the moment, so it is not an option.

Give your eyes a while to adjust to the contacts. I remember not being all too sure of them at first either. Now after 15 years of wearing them, I hardly ever wear my glasses. I wear them at home when I get off work and "take my eyes out" because it's more comfortable after a long day of wearing them. I'll wear them out sometimes only if it's a cloudy day or at night and I don't have to worry about wanting to have sunglasses on. The 20/20 peripheral vision of contacts is what makes me prefer them. The halos you see around street lamps is a pain when the contacts are getting old. Just make sure you don't wear them to sleep because you'll wake up in an uncomfortable cloudy world.

I've worn glasses since I was about 11 years old. I never tried contacts, partially because Mom never would let me get them when I was younger. Now that I am on my own, I still don't have them though. I only wear them at the movies or ball games or for driving at night...kinda like what you did. My vision is 20/40 so it's really not that bad. I either don't wear them or I put them on when necessary. I've often thought about contacts, but I suppose I just haven't gotten motivated enough to actually go get the damn things. I'm curious to see what people on this thread say though.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I wore glasses for about 2 weeks. Drove me nuts.

I wear contacts exclusively now.... I always have them in... only switch them in the morning to allow them to soak and clean...

Thought about lasik.... maybe someday.. the contacts really don't bother me at all though...

I really MISS having contacts.....I wear glasses full time now cuz an eye infection I had "ate" a hole in my cornea so I can no longer wear contacts & am not a candidate for the Lasik either.....

At least with glasses you don't have to buy cleaning solutions, etc or clean them when you don't feel like it....

I prefer contacts over glasses. I've gotten to the point that I can't wear my glasses outside. It seems like I see better with my contacts. I soon hope to get rid of both and get the laser surgery.

The very slight blur may be due to dry eyes or maybe the lens don't fit exactly correct. Some people feel that glasses gives you the most clear vision vs contacts.

Some lens brands types give clearer vision than others due to the % of water they contain. More water may mean less clear but you can wear them longer hours..

This very slight blur over glasses is worth the benefits of contacts over glasses.
Also you may get slight Halo effects around lights at night with contacts.

I would reccommend having both - glasses for around the house and contacts for out and about - if you wear them all the time, contacts can cause swelling in your eye and actually change your prescription over time - it is good to let you eyes rest and "return to shape" everyonce in a while...

I don't have a problem with them being blurry at all... also I thought they had contacts for astigmatism now? Maybe not...

Lasik scares the shit out of me... My eyes and my cock are the two things I donb't thiink one should mess with... If I did get it done I would go to an expensive dude and not some discount place...

the first few days I only wore them for a few hours at a time, I've had them in all weekend long. Vision does seem to get better after using eyedrops.

So the "halo" effect on lights affects all contact users then.

BTW
should I stick to eye drops specialized for contacts or can I just buy visine or any regular eye drops?

When I first got contacs my doctor was surprised that I saw better with them than my glasses. She said that most people see better with glasses. I liked contacs just because I could see when I would wake up in the morning without reaching for my glasses. Plus when it rained.

the doc did say that my corneas are pretty flat so he was worried that the lens might slide around on me. So far that doesn't seem to be a big issue so I hope that blurryness goes away.

these are 30day/30 night disposables which means you can (theoretically) leave them in for a whole month. I assume these guys are loaded with water then. They also gave me some accuvues to try out, these are 2 week disposables but they need to be taken out each night.

Dry eyes is a major problem across the board with contacts.. I carry drops.

Yea, Halo effect is universal pretty much.. Some lenses are worse than others

Use only wetting drops for contacts or saline as the lens will absorb the drops and that may cause issues if you use them a lot with buildup/burn of the chemicals in visine etc. Actually I carry a small bottle of plain saline as it works as well..

After a while taking lenses out / in will become second nature and you will be able to put your finger on the lens on your eyeball and move it around to clear
an irritant such as dust. It's like your eyeball get toughened..

Ugh...I hate rain and glasses.

You need eyedrops especially for contact lenses...

I don't mind glasses....1-2 times a year I miss wearing sunglasses.

Go with the nightly removed lenses.. Better for the health of your eyes...
I've been wearing nightly removed lensed since 1979 with no issues

A friend of mine just got these hard lens that you put in over night and take out in the morning and your vision is perfect. I think it cost like $2000 but hard lens last a lot longer, she loves it. I wear glasses for reading that is about it. I used to wear contact when I was in school but I found them annoying in the winter when they would get all dried out.

Make sure you take care of your eyes if your gonna wear contacts...I used to wear mine everyday for about 12-16 hours and occasionally would fall asleep with them in. This is NOT a good idea! I ended up getting 2 ulcers in my eye because they had become very dry (like dry skin) and as soon as you touch a clean contact, you contaminate it. This bacteria got into my eye because it was so dry. I was told to NEVER wear contacts again! Although I have seen someone else who told me I can wear them occasionally now, but need to use artificial tears to keep my eyes lubricated.
So if you like your contacts, good luck, your eyes will get used to them, but remember it is important to give your eyes a rest too. Try to wear your glasses when your not going out and ALWAYS take them out at night!

I have glasses and contacts. Was thinking about getting lasik in the next couple weeks. I haven't heard of these hard lens. What is it called?

that seems pretty cool

Did your friend happen to mention if it is costly? The way the site goes around the cost issue they make it sound like it might be expensive

As everyones eye prescriptions is different, fees for Ortho-K are determined on a case by case basis after careful pre-fit examinations. Financial terms may be discussed. We accept Visa, Mastercard and Interac for payment

I just asked her it is $1300 CDN they last for 2 years.

i wear contacts and have an even harder time remembering to take them out at night.
I have horrible eyesight cant see far away at all it is just a big blur of colors and up close at least an inch is where i can see somewhat alright.
Sucks-- and i hate glasses except before i go to bed.

i can't stand contacts. it's a pain in the ass to put in (takes me sometimes 15 minutes) and then gotta take it out at night. Too much hassle. I'll just wear glasses.

I just started wearing glasses a few months ago. I can see without them but it makes my head hurt. It is just easier for me to see with them on. I always wear them for my artwork though as I can't see tiny details when I am tired.

Contacts never entered my mind. I picked out bold funky frames and LOVE THEM!!!

I have "a thing" about touching my eyeballs and dont think that I will ever consider contacts. If my vision should get so bad that I can't see without glasses I think I will just break down and get the surgery.

I really REALLY LOVE wearing my glasses. :nerd:

I got fitted for contacts a long time ago, loved 'em, had no problems; but my optometrist died before it came time to replace the first set, and the guy who took over his practice didn't do nearly as good a job. The second set were uncomfortable, didn't work as well, and then the guy gave me a horror story about how I was getting all "envasculated" (the capillaries in my eyes were branching out because I was "oxygen starved"). So there was no third set.

Plus my prescription went from zero astigmatism (good!) to some astigmatism (uh-oh) which made my glasses suckier. Thank goodness for the new materials that let lenses be thinner -- mine used to be a half-inch thick at the edge (back when BIG GLASSES were in vogue).

I'm tyring the Accuvues today, so far they feel much more comfortable and the blurryness is slightly lessend, but none the less still there. Do you ever stop noticing the border at the edge of the lenses? Is it weird that I can see it?
