Giving Blood ....

Hi,

Can anyone tell me if there's a reason why you shouldn't give blood if you've used steroids?

I'm off cycle at the moment (that's another story half my stuff arrived still waiting for the other half 3 wks on!). I was going to give blood and one of the questions is "have you or your partner ever used steroids", I can't really see how this i relevent and it's worried my gf as well.

Should we just lie? Or is our blood not good enough! Any ideas?

think about it bro seriously. if you have synthetic test or other androgens in your blood, do you think they want to give it to an 8 year old boy or girl??? NO.

Okay, good point, I can understand that, but if you haven't done a cycle for 7-8 months? And (more importantly) what about the "partner" bit, why should my girlfriend not be able to give blood, she never touched the stuff?

I'm going leave it, as obviously I don't want to cause anyone any harm. Just interested if anyone else has experience of this sort of thing.

Cheers.

I was curious about the same thing....gave blood for 2nd time today(2months ago gave)....I just tell them "no" for that ?. Actually they only take my red cells and give me the plasma back....takes a little longer but better....My GP advised me to donate as my red cells are too numerous and this is good way to keep your blood good. Steriods have no effect ...or they wouldn't have called me for another donation...........anyway makes me feel good to know i can help someone maybe......

There concern is not what you used but that you did IM injections and may have infected your self with hiv.

Yup, they would allow anyone to donate that participates in a HRT program. They are just concerned with diesease transmission with unsupervised and underground injectable drugs. They probably dont trust ug bathtub roids and improper sterile techniques, hell they've probaly read one of these forums and read the "can I use a needle more than once if I wipe it down with alcohol" threads and got a little concerned!

I dont remember being asked if me or my partner have ever used steroids (remember that birth control is a steroid) but I was asked if I have ever used a needle w/o dr. supervision. When I truthfully answered yes (Stupid!) I was disqualified. Not just that time either, they enter it into a database so anytime my social security # comes up it will say "disqualified".

hiya. pharmacist.

as said above, the issue is with illicit IV or IM drug use. many people dont view roids as illicit drugs (since they arent rec drugs) and so a separate question must be asked to get at the truth.

also, that little bit of testosterone (or whatever) that you think youre passing on to the recipient is inconsequential.

also, when they do a profile on the blood, its nice to know why there are so many red cells vs white cells - or they might think you have some sort of unexplained disorder

cheerios

I agree, If you inject you cant not give blood, usually for 12months, just like if you have had a tattoo, piercing or acupuncture.
