did they do it in static code after being used to doing it in dynamic code?
or is it just to be cool... I want to know.

Did you ever pour out salt and pepper on the table and mix it together, and then run a comb through your hair a few times and use the static to pick up the pepper? It's a neat trick. I use it at the bar all the time to get the chicks.
