After 12 years on the air, George Foreman is leaving the HBO Boxing broadcast team in 2004. Foreman said he wants to spend more time with his family.
Foreman will work the broadcast of the Vitali Klitschko-Kirk Johnson match tomorrow night from Madison Square Garden. Foreman then will return for one final broadcast in February, that because he auctioned off a chance to spend a broadcast with him in Las Vegas for a charity.
"He's been troubled about being away from home for the last year," HBS Sports president Ross Greenburg said yesterday. "He told me he has a son in prep school in New England who rushed for 100 yards a game and he wasn't able to see any of those games this season.
"I have a world of respect for this man. It's rare in broadcasting when a man at the top just walks away. He's a preacher, a businessman and a family man and he has his priorities straight. He's been an institution and an icon here. We'll miss him desperately."
Foreman, 54, became a multi-millionaire by attaching his name to a grilling machine. He was working on a new contract with HBO, but Greenburg said the network could not accommodate Foreman's desire for more time off from the boxing broadcasts.
Greenburg said the network has not thought about a replacement because Foreman's announcement yesterday caught it by surprise.
"We have until Jan. 2 to come up with a Plan B," he said. "We're looking at filling a massive void."

I always liked George's commentary. He always told it like it was. Even if the fight looked fixed, he'd say stuff like "there are higher powers at work here". He'll definitely be missed
