Gains after taking time off?

I've heard this before, but I'd like to know HOW or WHY it works.

You train for X months (6-8) and take a week or two off training. You can be active during that time, but not do what you've been doing.

You get back into it and start making better gains. Repeat again in 6-8 months or so.

Your body gets a break and gets back to normal. Its kind of like running when you get a second wind. You would be suprised how much you would grow in those 1-2 weeks of a year.

There are 2 main reasons for this

1. Rest

Give your body a break once in a while and you will be amazed at what will happen.

2. Change

People always seem to think one workout technique or another works best. The important thing to remember is that no matter which technique or exercise you use, the body will eventually adapt to it. Therefore, changing your workout patterns (Exercises, Reps, Sets, Training Days, Rest Periods etc...) will do wonders.
