Damn, I don't blame that fat boy. I probably would have shot Hartman also.

Yeah, that dude just wasn't cut out for the military. Don't think it was his fault. They should have just shipped him home. But Hartman kept fucking with him and I think he enjoyed it.

I watched that shit a few days before I left for Marine Corps boot camp. Not good timing. It had is moments, but I never had the urge to kill anyone. We did have a kid kill himself though. Out of 120 of us who started training in my platoon, 70 graduated.

How and where did he kill himself?

You would have thought hartman would have been shot before after being like that for over 20 years. The movie had the most realistic feel to boot camp that I've seen in a movie. Although I've never seen Drill Instructor go that far but then again it was a different time and it was only a movie.

We had a guy try and kill himself in Army basic. I don't think he succeeded. Drank something if I recall. We did give another f*ck-up a blanket party. He was gone withing two weeks after.

He killed himself in the bathroom with a blade out of one of the disposable razors he had. Firewatch found him. Apparently he put his hand between his legs so his blood ran into the toilet, and it was too late by the time they realized something was up. Keep in mind, this is what I was told by another recruit. In boot camp, they can tell you that the sky is purple and damn if it doesn't start to look like it after a while.

Are you proud of yourself? Karma

That's sad.

why go through all that trouble? didn't he have access to knives and GUNS?

why do they watch recruits so closely like that? sounds like he had to be sneaky about it.

They watch every move that you make, if you scratch your face, they will see you do it and give you hell for it. All part of breaking them down I guess.

You have a gun most of the time. For a few weeks you actually have ammo it is pretty tightly accounted for. If one round goes missing, there is a huge formation and shit is searched. No knives at all in boot camp.

its all about mind programming...the brain is just like a computer, and when its called upon it recalls information that has been instilled (loaded/programmed)....in extreme stress you have two human responses: flight or fight...just like animals...the training teaches the brain to fight and go against "flight"...there is a line Hartman said in the movie" if you hesitate at the moment of truth, you will be in a world of shit, and then you will be dead...and marines are not allowed to die without permission".... not everyone is born to kill and some cannot be taught to either...Lee Ermy is a very cool guy (actor) and he is worshiped around the world by the troops and has Carte Blanc wherever he goes....

He was a drill instructor in the marines. I know a guy who served with him. You are right. Not all can be programmed, probably genetic differences more than anything.

They are trying to get Irmey to be the guest speaker at a mess night here on the base where I live and work. The reason he is as respected as he is, he was a real Marine gunnery sergeant. Not just an actor.

ORM, did they ever ask yall what your relgion was? When they asked if anyone was agnostic or athiest, did anyone raise their hand? Maybe they don't do that anymore, but they use to.

yes I know...Lee was a tech advisor for the Movie, FMJ...the actor that was being coached by him, didnt have the right stuff and the director called Lee in his hotel room and asked him to play the part...the rest is history....... wise choice by everyone...

The only time I remember that being asked was when they made dog tags. Not really a very big deal. I know that a lot of people found religion (for at least 12 weeks) during that time.

Things have changed then. If you were asked that question and you admitted to being agnostic or athiest, they would have given you a lot of shit in front of everyone and told you that you WOULD go to church. I guess they've learned. I've always been ahead of my time.
