Fruit

What role does fruit play in an athlete and weightlifters diet. Is fruit just good for giving energy? Does it have any other qualities like protein? I'm talking apples, peaches, pears, strawberries etc. My boxing coach says I should eat atleat one piece of fruit a day, preferably before I workout.

One piece of fruit a day won't kill you, but it's not ideal. It's all still sugar. There are better carb sources.

Maybe for bodybuilding purposes Gymtime, but eating at least 3 pieces of fruit a day is essential IMO for a healthy diet. Building muscles is great, but so is being healthy.

Vitamins, natural chemicals (ex: apple pectin) are good reasons to eat some. People freak out and think you'll turn into a fat ass if you eat too much, but a piece or 2 a day is cool.

Fruit can be a quick source of energy because of its sugar content - that may be why your coach says to eat a piece before you workout. Runners commonly have a banana before a run.

I eat at least 5 pieces of fruit throughout the day, if not more. I haven't noticed that i am getting fatter. Right now, i just maintain my fatness :D
