I used to ride this bus on occasion before I got a car. The spot where it happened is about a block from city hall and the police still didn't arrive quickly. The saddest part is how the bus full of witnesses scattered like rats.

A bus rider gunned down a fellow passenger on an NJ Transit bus on Broad Street in Newark yesterday, leaving dozens of horrified onlookers as he ran from the scene, police said.
The 3:30 p.m. shooting unfolded minutes after both men boarded a crowded No. 62 bus, which had just begun a local route that runs from Newark Penn Station to Newark Liberty International Airport, downtown Elizabeth and Perth Amboy.
The two men argued briefly, and as the bus crossed the intersection of Broad and South streets, one pulled out a gun and fired at least twice, police said. The gunman fled the bus and was last seen running north on Broad Street, police said.
The victim, who police would not identify, was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he died, said Police Director Anthony Ambrose.
An NJ Transit spokesman said there were 51 passengers riding the standing-room-only bus, which had left Penn Station at 3 p.m. But by the time officers arrived, all but the driver were gone.
At the time of the shooting, many NJ Transit buses were running on Broad Street, including others on the No. 62 route.
Police said some of the passengers boarded at least one other bus, which they were trying to track down last night. They urged any witnesses to call the department's homicide unit at (973) 733-5400.
None of the other passengers were injured, Ambrose said.
The shooting forced police to stop southbound traffic on Broad Street at the start of the evening rush hour. Northbound traffic slowed to a crawl.
Other NJ Transit buses were detoured around the crime scene, but kept a regular schedule, according to NJ Transit spokesman Dan Stessel.
Yesterday's shooting is the second on an NJ Transit bus this year. On Jan. 28, Jason Pecco, 22, of Trenton, was shot five times inside an NJ Transit bus on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Trenton. Another bullet grazed a 12-year-old girl. Police have charged a 17-year-old in that shooting.
