I'm looking at getting an LP, I love vintage LP's circa~68, but I get cost on anything new, so it's difficult for me to pass up a newer model. I have been looking at the new Les Paul Supremes with the figured back... they are pretty damn sick lookin. Experienced players, what you all think I should go for... ~3k budget. New custom? New supreme? New custom shop model? or maybe you hate les pauls?

I'm a Les Paul NUT. i got like 5 right now bouncing around at my house.

I've stopped advising people on what to get. It's so subjective a decision, tahat what works for me, and satisfies my taste -- is completely different for someone else. It's all about the SOUND, and the LOOK - and those can only be decided upon by going to see one in person.

With that said -- i can *suggest* what *i* like - and that's les paul custom's with EMG 81/85's. That's my SWEET combo that i'll swear on. Does everything and does it well. Dont' forget the GHS boomer strings, 10's, and perfect sweet ass setup and intonation.

I prefer the black les paul with white/gold bindings. Or get the "smokish" silverburst les paul. i wanna get that. f'n badass looking one.

I vote for a Korina Les Paul Jr. Those things are awesome.

Or a goldtop with P-90s.

I like my Hamers, good quality and good prices...

I've never seen a Les Paul Custom in any color other than black that looked decent. I despise all sunburst Customs, especially the silver-grayburst, gagorama! Sorry. The white or cream Customs are nasty too.

I guess I'm just too much of a vintage snob. I feel that all Customs should be black, all Standards should be either gold or cherry sunburst, all Specials should be "limed mahogany" or cherry, and all Juniors should be sunburst, "TV Yellow," or cherry.

I'll make an exception for cherry or black Standards, 'cause George Harrison had a Cherry '59 or '60 LP, and Neil Young has a black '50s Standard.

You want funny colors? Get a Fender. Strats work in almost any color.

I'll keep my blonde Telecaster though.

damn, i wish i had a 3k guitar budget. i have to settle on cheap ass acoustics. the only electric i have is a squire strat. :'( I really want a Gibson SG or atleast the Tokai SG knockoff 2004 model, i just love the bigsby on that. Yeah i would get the LP custom for sure.

I'm more of an SG fan when it comes to Gibson's, but that's just me. I'd say any Les Paul you get is going to be pretty damn sweet though so you shouldn't have much to worry about.

I want an axe.

I'd have to learn to play it though. Is that hard?

You better just stick with "playing with yourself"

nav, do me a favor and go play the new supreme, they should have it at G.C. sunset... i see you like the zack wild setup... I would like to get my hands on some vintage ceramics over emgs truthfully but I do play mostly metal tone oriented material so i dunno... I'm really just torn here. I get 10 over cost on the supremes or anything else new for that matter. They seem to retail for the same as the new customs which baffles me because everything about the specs on the supreme is > than the custom... more input anyone? I can probably fetch a ~70 for about 2k on ebay but am weary of getting somthing with headstock damage.

you're probably better off with a newer one anyway. i have a couple vintage guitars, and although they're in great shape, they've gone through wear, especially the machineheads, fretboard, and bridge. i've learned to put up with it, but i don't have to worry about it at all with a newer guitar.

you really need to play a few different guitars before you make up your mind. since you're looking at just LP's, you don't need to worry about the feel so much, so concentrate on the sound. I'm with you on the ceramics. EMG's are great, but vintage ceramics just have that hot tone that only ceramics can provide.

buy an old LP or get a custom one made. Just my opinion but Gibson and Fender are making overpriced "machine made" crap these days, they ain't hand made.......
3k to spend..... Ed Roman guitars... he will hand make anything you can dream up.

great thread. I'm a guitar player who plays whatever they hand me (that's a lefty). I wish I knew more about pickups, yada yada yada. Looks great though. Thanks for educating me. Appreciated, k to all.

well I already have:
-Pink Thinline tele
-Richie Sambora Signature Strat <-- fastest fender i've ever played.
-Fat Strat Deluxe
-P.R.S. Santana II
-some P.O.S. peavey
... yet NO LES PAUL
Had an original 62 SG, but it wasn't worth nearly as much to me as it was to the guy I sold it to... hence my current collection :D

Agreed. Great lookin' finish on that LP Nav. :)

I'm a huuuge LP fan. It's all about tone baby. Very distinctive sound.

Doesn't a lot of the sound depend on the amp as well?

i used to have a LP. one thing i didn't like about it was the cut of the body WHILE PLAYING SITTING DOWN. my right forearm would rest on an angular edge and i just didn't like that. personally, i like guitars that have a cutout to rest your forearm on. i suppose it depends on how you play and if you stand up a lot, etc.

I only have acoustic guitars at the mo but sure would like to get new electric guitar. PRS, Les Paul or Strato.

I play mostly fenders live just because I have a hard time running around with the thicker bodied guitars. But if I had 3K to spend, I would definitely look at a few PRS models.

PRS guitars play nice, but when have you ever heard a song on the radio and thought "wow, listen to that great PRS tone!" The guitars have no character at all.

So, ZK, did you ever do anything?

I still say look at the Korina LP Jr., if you can find one.
