Flu Shot Opinion

theoak01

New member
is it worth the bother to go and get this,I rarely get sick but really cant afford to, does it make a huge difference?

opinions,stats anything will help

thanks

I get the flu once every 4-5 years and I'm in bed for a week. I usually think, I don't need the shot, but those times I get the flu I wish I had. I should get off my lazy ass and get one.

Defiately get the shot...some flus will take you out for 3 weeks! I've had several...but since I started taking flu shots, it only hits me for a few days...if at all.

never had a flu shot in my life,I usually shake any serious flu in 4-5 days and have a stuffy nose for a few weeks tops

Flu shots are stupid. You end up getting the flu after getting the shot which is the idea. It is nothing more than a best guess as to what strain it has mutated into at that time. So you got a bunch of geneticists playing god with some bad dna that they inject into you.

I have never taken the flu shot and have never gotten the flu!

There are soooo many strains of flu. The pharma companies throw a dart and hope they manufacture the right virus that will hit this flu season. It doesn't ALWAYS help, but can't hurt. This flu vaccine can fight against SARS, so I think I'm going to get it this year.

Healthy people do not need flu shots. It's for the elderly, those with compromised immune systems, and the very young.

We get them free up here, but I'm still debating whether or not I want to do it.

I DO get the flu at least once every year though, so mabye I should. Plus if what NorthNPrincess says about SARS is correct, I think maybe I will, we're due for another bout of SARS abouts now..

It also depends what environment you work and live in.
My wife and I are both in education. So our threat level is higher.
I've gotten the shot every year and haven't had the flu in years. Which is fine by me......but to each his own.

I am a student so I am around unclean and smelling bastards who goto school sick all the time. I have already got a cold since school started but just a head cold, I may get it but like chesty said Im not a big fan of getting the flu by taking the shot

u will not get the flu by getting the shot! the whole point of it is an attenuated or dead form of the flu virus is injected into you...u will only get the flu from it if you manage to get some really badly manufactured stuff or you're severely imunocomprimised, both if which are unlikely since they are recommended for diabetics and the elderly

the flu shot is a series of immunizations against various strains of influenza, which are selected on their prevalance in the country and around the world. so essentially the Dr's are guessing which flu will find its way into sweet canada. they might guess wrong, but having it wont harm you, its just not 100% for that reason

if your young and healthy then fuck it, a cold shouldnt knock u down too hard if u eat and train well. having said that since canada is a big ice popsicle if colds knock u down hard over there go for it!

Well, I beg to differ. Everyone I have ever known to get the shot has ended up with the flu. And I'll bet that not all flu vaccines are dead versions. I suspect they are weaker versions of the best guess of what is likely to dominate.

WTF?. Oh yeah?! Well as a 3rd year med student let me tell you and everyone else...... you are completely correct. Only a few here will remember when Pres. Jimmy Carter put so much effort into getting the Swine flu vaccine to everyone in the USA - then the Swine flu never materialized. SOme other strain went around - I think the Hong Kong Flu.

I have had one patient whose wife died from that very same Swine Flu vaccine. I have seen 3 people who got Guillain Barre syndrome (the most common form of rapidly developing paralysis in the USA). They all got it from the flu vaccine. If you look up information from the Internation Guillain Barre Syndrome foundation the flu vaccine is listed as one of the main causes.

Its true, the scientists who develop it each year have to win the virus mutation lottery to get the correct strain into a vaccine, and regardless the flu vaccine has some potentially serious side effects. May be worth it for Hepatitis B if you are prone to being exposed to contaminated blood or sexual fluids, but for the flu? I don't think so personally, in my opinion.

wanna hear soemthing sad... i've never had the "flu"... every sickness since i can remember was strep throat or basic cold. NEVER had the flu.

I just got a hepatitis B shot recently for school. Does this mean I can have sex and not worry about contracting Hepatitis? For how long?

I was just out for 3 weeks because of a nasty flu virus! Hong Kong viruses are much worse, however.

Get vaccinated! The possible sides from vaccination are fever and some other flu like symptoms (generally very mild). But it is nothing severe and you don't need to stop working out, IMO. And most people don't get those sides.

Generic MALE note : This is a highly edited article. Apologies to the author. Note the number of times flu vaccines are mentioned. I will admit I could be wrong about vaccines. I hope my presenting this information does not persuade anyone to make a wrong decision. Best of health to you all....GM

Guillain-Barré syndrome
By James Broomfield, MD

Guillain-Barré syndrome is thought to be an autoimmune disorder that is triggered by an infection, vaccination, or other factors. It causes a severe inflammatory reaction around the nerves. The myelin sheath becomes swollen. Impulses and messages cannot travel along the course of the nerve. In time, nerve impulses are blocked.

What are the signs and symptoms of the condition?

People with GBS usually have muscle weakness or paralysis that starts in the legs and feet. It progresses up toward the arms and head. Sometimes the weakness starts in the arms and moves downward. Occasionally, it starts in the arms and legs at the same time. The spread from feet to head can occur within 24 to 72 hours but can take longer.

Muscle weakness can lead to the following symptoms: · blurred vision · constipation · difficulty breathing · difficulty swallowing and chewing · difficulty urinating or even starting to urinate · dizziness · fainting · loss of bowel and/or bladder control · muscle pain and contractions · numbness and decreased sensation · painful or tingling sensations in the arms and legs · palpitations, or an unusual awareness of the heart beating in the chest · uncoordinated movements

What are the causes and risks of the condition?

Most cases of Guillain-Barré syndrome are triggered by an infection......

Some vaccinations may also trigger Guillain-Barré syndrome. These include: · flu vaccine · immunization against group A streptococcal infections · rabies vaccine · swine flu immunizations

What are the long-term effects of the condition?

About 95% of those with Guillain-Barré syndrome survive. About 75% completely recover. For some, mild weakness or chronic pain will continue throughout life. GBS can be fatal if it causes problems with breathing. Full recovery can be expected if symptoms go away not long after they appear. This usually happens within 3 weeks.

Weakness and decreased sensation can cause contractures. Contractures occur because muscles become thick and tight when they are not used. They shrink and shorten, causing joint deformities. There can also be loss of movement in the affected areas.

Blood clots may develop because of loss of motion and muscle contractions. Blood-thinning medicines, such as warfarin or heparin, can be given to help prevent blood clots. There is an increased risk of infection, including pneumonia. ...................

What are the treatments for the condition?

Initial treatment of GBS focuses on life support. A ventilator, or artificial breathing machine, may be needed. Fluids can be given through an intravenous line. Food can be given through a tube into the stomach.................................

Still spanking the monkey hunh? I don't think you can get hep B from yourself.

Out 3 weeks for the flu? That seems like a long time. I wonder if your immune system is in tip top shape.

check its epidemiology (left out in your quoting)...its RARE (The incidence of the Guillain-Barre syndrome is 2 per 100 000 per year) and this is for all causes not just vaccine....i doubt vaccine causes are even a whole number

the incidence of GB syndrome in a set of vaccinations is low, it has to be for the vaccine to be approved by the FDA/CDC. you can get GB syndrome from a bad case of campylobacter poisoning but its incidence is extremely low. you still eat meat, right?

any viral infection or any viral immunisation can potentially cause this RARE condition.

as for hep B if you are inolved in patient contact or exposed to a variety of bodily fluids then you have to have it for insurance purposes in many cases. Hep B is so resiliant a virus it creates a problem even on surfaces that are cleaned. i beleieve the immunisations is a series of monoclonal antibody injections to increase the serum antibody levels, and therefore DOESN'T give total immunity. it has to be topped up every 3 years.

as for the flu vaccine it comes down to the crux of medicine - cost vs. benefit. a diabetic could get a serious infection....or commencal bacteria could invade and give a pneumonia so for someonelike that this immunisation is GREAT. a healthy person, its individual

no...i dont think the immunisation is 100%, it just offers good protection. how worrying is that! its infectivity is more that that of HIV...i think a 1000 times more, but not sure. definatley a multiple of 10 :D

yup i did say they are either attenuated or dead, mostly attenuated when dealing with virus's

but you will not get true flu if you immunise yourself. otherwise it would be illogical to offer free immunisations to immunocomprimised patients. if it is a weaker form of the virus you will mount an immune response much quicker and only have marginal symptoms, anyone i know who had it had very little symptoms if any and recovered in a day or so

I get the flu shot every year because I have asthma. I love it...I find that I never get the flu and my colds are even less frequent. If you are in constant contact with the public or have little kids at home in can be worth it.

That's a good question. Probably not.

Also, I am living in Asia and it could be travel related. In other words, I am not aclimated to the viruses in Hong Kong... or something like that. SE Asia has the worst viruses.

Get the shot........I thought I didnt have time to get mine this year then I got the flu!! Been feeling like shite for a few weeks now. It isnt worth missing it.

How long is the Hep B vaccine good for? I had the whole series of shots in 1993-1994 because I was always dealing with street shit and blood.

I was arrested and charged with a shit load of felonies one bright sunny morning while I left my house. By the end of the day I figured out what happened.

Seems that a disgruntle ex-girlfriend went to her new boyfriend who was a lead Internal Affairs investigator hatched an idea. She would make believe she was an informant and he could take the case to his superiors. They never told their superiors that they were living together.

This was in revenge for a suit I won against her about 6 months prior.

She told them shit that made me sound like an insane criminal. Gun running, hits, breaking into things. All nice fun stuff.

Anyway, they raided my place as they carted me off to the secret location where Internal Affairs works out of. They grilled me for 9 hours without a lawyer. I kept asking for one and the told me that I wasn’t getting one. To make things worse they put me in a small wooden school chair and cuffed me low so I was in pain for about 4 hours.

I finally was freed on $5000 bail after my father took up a collection in the bar he goes to.

Here is where it gets interesting.

The ADA uncovers that they are BF and GF. As the complaints start falling apart one by one there is a new problem. They uncovered some really hairy shit in my apartment.

Scanners modified to intercept Cell phones and reprogram phones
I hacked into their systems from the outside and was in their NEW secure computers
Several million dollars worth of software
Forged police identifications
Videos and photos of women police officers engaged in very slutty stuff in uniform – one was the daughter of an Internal Affairs lieutenant
Hells Angel’s contacts and Israelis that they deemed “suspicious”
Plus tens of thousands of dollars in computers
A nice new copy of the Sergeants Exam that they just gave to thousands of cops

They fucked up. The warrant was bad. The address was wrong but they hit the right house. Now they have the main case that fell apart and all this new information that was inadmissible.

I was considered the most dangerous cop in NYC! HAHAHA

In the end, WE agreed that I would leave. I had an option to stay but I didn’t like their options to work with IAB and show them everything I knew about computers and shit without a detective shield.

IAB – Boyfriend detective is tossed out. His sergeant demoted to Police Officer, ex-girlfriend sent to Harlem.

rtemple - my god guy! They could have made a movie out of that. I used to get the Hep b shot because I worked in the jail with inmates. Never know what they might throw on you or when they might bite you!

thats fucking crazy bro,if someone fucked with my career like that I would lose it

1995 – W2 said $38,400 thank you NYPD
2001 – W2 said $215,000

I think I can let this go and sleep tight.

rtemple - my god guy! They could have made a movie out of that.

As far as stories I have some stuff that would make the news if I rolled and talked.

The real reason why the Crown Heights riots started. A NYPD lieutenant started it
Cop that shot someone in the back 3x and then laid a gun down
Beatings and illegal arrests

The list goes on and on

holy shit. thank god the patriot act wasnt passed back then. You'd be locked for months for that shit now.

i need to get another cordless phone scanner. Those things were hillarious fun at parties!!

I did it once and will never do it again.

How come? Did you get sick from it?

I got the flu shot this year for the first time... two years ago I had the flu and was out for a week. I figured I might as well get my flu shot this year because I can't afford to get sick, especially around exam time.

I felt fine after getting my flu shot, but my mom got sick from it once... I think some people have bad reactions to the flu shot, so maybe get it done on a Fri if you get it so that way if you're not feeling well afterwards you'll have 2 days to veg out and get better. I don't think having a bad reaction is that common though, at least not a serious one - anyone know how common it is?

Never have, never will get one. "IF" I do ever get sick, it is only at a maximum 4-5 days.
