i just upgraded hermans living quarters from a 3/4 gallon vase with a plant thats roots hung down in it, to a 5 gallon hex shaped tank with a filter, 2 caves for him to swim in, and 2 live plants, now hes happier than soklueles at an all you can eat buffet, hes swimming like crazy and exploring his caves, he peeks out of them and waves to me, the problem is the damn tank got cloudy the next day, wtf is that all about??? his old vase didnt get cloudy for a long time, now this one gets like it in less than 24hrs, anyone know why it would get like that and is there anything i can put in it to clear the water up

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr i hate when u say soklueles at an all u can eat buffet

yes, jus ask at the pet store, i used to have fish; i can't remember what it's called though.

lol!

have you ever put an all you can eat buffet out of business?

I think we saw it there, dang there was everything but we didnt think it would get this cloudy so quick

hamstershaver, i used to work at a pet store in the fish area. i know exactly what your problem is.

basically to make it simple, new water is sterile. when the animal takes shits/pisses there isnt good bacteria in the water to eat the shit, its gets cloudy. dont change the water. dont change all of it at once. let it ride out and it will go away. once you get a good bacteria bed, you should be fine. its unhealthy for the fish so let it ride out and it will go away once there is enough bacteria to eat the waste. there are products in the pet store that can help "cycle" your tank out. its normal.the products are cheap and work well. make sure you use spring water or dechlorinate the water.
hope that helps.

Also did you thoroughly wash off everything in the new environment before putting it in. Could be some particulates from the new caves, rocks, etc. And what eat big said about conditioning the tank.

Cheers,
Scotsman

yes i put the tablets in to dechlorinate the water, how unhealthy is the water now? and what are the names of the products i should put in his tank?

yeah i washed them, so i dont think that would be it

yup like eat big said..your tank is cycling (no pun intended..lol)...you can buy a product called "cycle" to accelerate the process somewhat, but it still can take 1-2 weeks...i had no clue about all this crap until i bought a 125 gallon tank and put 10 pirahnas in it...5 of those fuckers died and my tank was so cloudy i couldnt see the fish the first week. right now the ammonia/nitrates/nitrites levels are all out of wack, your fish could very well die from it, hopefully he;s a tough one though.

The beneficial bacteria are called nitrosomanos and nitrobacters though I mis spelled them for sure.

It takes 6 weeks for a new tank to mature and have a proper amount of these bacteria.

You should have kept some old stuff and put it in the new tank to keep the bacteria viable.

Everybody does the opposite and kills everything with hot chlorinated water.

Cloudy water is always toxic (Protein and ammonia) in my experience. Replace 1/2 the water quickly and keep the temp the same and remove the chlorine.

When the water is cloudy....replace 1/2 of it quickly.

Somebody overfed the tank...another thing that people always do.

Still have you old plant? Get it in there if it is alive. Plants consume ammonia which is toxic to fish. Ammonia tears up their gills.

Sounds good.

Feed him less than you used to for a month.

Good thing you have plants in there.

You may have moved the tank.

Remember that plants need some light. Similar to what worked last time.

Good luck hamster, I'vl always liked little furry things.

he will be fine your ammonia and nitrites and ph will spike but he should be ok. buy a product called cycle or bio bacteria. DO NOT empty any water, that will fuck your tank up even more. it will set you back to where you started from. once its clear, never take all the water out.

im assuming this is a beta? they are very resiliant. i wouldnt worry. your levels should normalize themselves considering its suh a small tank. i have a 125 gallon tank and when my lvls are off i begin to worry. but you should be ok.

since we are on the topic of fish can anyone get their hands on Snakeheads?
