File Compression

My movie files are waaay too large for how long they are (1gig + for about 10 minutes length) Anyone know how I can shrink them? My computer says they are already compressed.

they are in avi, I think they used to be in mpeg. How do I switch it? (It doesn't switch if you just rename it with ".mpeg" at the end.)

yes thats what it says. damn now my computer's flakin out typing in italics, fuckin popup software is messing other shit up. Half the time I can't even type a full word without the keyboard locking up or switching to caps.
