The table below reflects average talk time per month for 2 groups. When i am formatting the cells, which format do i choose so that the time is not reflected in my sheet as clock time but rather time lapsed? In essence I am trying to come up with an average talk time for each group for this time frame.

MRC CCS
Jan 3:47 4:53
Feb 3:49 4:43
Mar 3:44 4:43
Apr 3:41 4:59
May 3:40 4:31
Jun 3:47 4:32
Jul 4:11 4:35

of course when i post this, it will not show up as a pretty grid so excuse the formatting here but you get the gist. that info up there are actual columns on my sheet. thanks

no i want it in mm:ss and to be reflected as lapsed time, not time on the clock. and no matter what format I choose, it keeps coming up as time on the clock so I am unable to calculate the average

I have battled this Excel dragon many times. It is nearly impossible to show elapsed time in Excel, which is just bizarre to me.

I'm confused too.

The first one says 3:47, so that's 3 hrs 47mins? Or 3 Minutes 47 seconds? And is that value the result of a formula in that cell or is it typed in?

Actually, I might have this.

make column A the month, column B the start (3:47), column D the end (4:53), column E elapsed time

the formula for column E is just "=D1-C1"

According to google that should give you a decimal time but it gave me elapsed.

no those times up there are not start and end times
they reflect total talk time per phone call for 2 separate groups

ex. MRC group average talk time per call for the month of January is 3 minutes 47 seconds, and so on. I'm calculating the average talk time for jan-July for each group individually.

phuck excel, i just calculated it manually.

Then my original answer stands...I can't believe no Microsoft software gurus have come up with a clickety click button for this.

Why not just convert the values into seconds? Then you can just figure out the average in seconds? Then convert back at the end?
