Esterified andro converted to T by esterase?

Can prohormones be esterified? For example could you esterify androstenedione which has a double bonded Oxygen at position 17 and create androstenedione propionate? When this was introduced into the body, would an esterase enzyme remove the ester and supply the missing Hydrogen atom to form testosterone? When you look at the structure of testosterone propionate and androstenedione, the only difference is the ester chain.
