Eh, why not, here's some pics

I'm mostly a lurker (for a long time) but I thought why not post some pics and get a critique too. I see so many others posting progress pics so I figure, eh, why not me too. Altho truthfully I am more into speed skating than I am bodybuilding. Bodybuilding is more-or-less just a hobby for me, I compete in speed skating whereas I have no plans to compete in bodybuilding. It's just something I like to do. I like the way it makes me look and I like being strong. :D Anyway, comments/critique appreciated. I'm a natty, 2yr 4mo of lifting when these pics were taken this past July. They're the most recent ones I have.

Please excuse the funky tan lines. :worried:

Hmmmm..... not sure other than continuing to lift and get my diet in line.

The diet took a lot of learning to find what I should be doing and by the same token it took a while to lose the fat. I started at 22% body fat and went down to 15% in those pics over about a year's time so during that time I gained muscle and lost fat. Do you happen to remember when the first pics I sent to you were taken? Cause I only have two other sets of progress photos. The first set was taken in August of 2001 when I had finally figured out the dieting thing and got serious (1yr 5mo of lifting). Then the second set was taken in November of 2001 so 3 months into serious cutting & lifting. Then these most recent ones were taken about a year after that. Just been cutting and lifting. Now since September though I have finally stopped cutting and am maintaining my bodyfat at 18% while trying to gain strength and some mass. I found I could not gain strength or mass at 15%. Not only that, but just to hold 15% bodyfat I have to be hungry almost constantly, damn genetics. Probably a combination of genetics and these damn b/c pills I'm on, but there are too many pro's for me to go off them.

So anyway, I don't know which photos I showed you but I haven't been doing anything special, just lifting, speed skating, and maintaining a proper diet.

Thanks for the compliments everyone! I really appreciate it! After being here a while and seeing how great everyone is, how supportive you all are, I thought I'd go ahead and post my most recent progress as well.

Maybe I should post the other "before" type progress pics so everyone can see what spatts is talking about. Of course I didn't think it was that dramatic of a change but then again, I guess you never do on yourself. That's why it's cool that we have the opportunity to share our progress with others, they can point out things we personally don't see on ourselves. Anyway, I don't have those other progress pics readily available, will take me a bit more time to get them ready and uploaded. Gotta go to the gym now though, have to get to it later.

Thanks again ladies!! :)

Looking great girl.

Your leg development is particularly impressive. Is that primarily due to your speed skating? I'm training a girl at the moment who is struggling with leg development. I have suggested she start cycling (as in riding a bike) as a way of improving her leg development quicker. What sort of leg training do you perform other than the skating?

Thanks! I really appreciate that! :D

Probably, that and genetics. My mom has thick, muscular legs as well.

I have indoor speed skating practices twice a week for 2-3 hours. It's a lot of sprinting as indoor speed skating is. So other than that, only thing I do for legs, is right now I'm doing 1 set each of 5 different exercises for 50 reps, yep 50 reps, very light weight. Reason I'm doing that is because my coach has told me I have plenty of explosive strength in my legs for sprinting but I really lack in the endurance department. My long races are my worst races as my legs tighten up too much on me. Everyone else starts pulling away from me meanwhile my legs are kaputt!

So I do one set of squats, currently at 55lbs for 50 reps. Then one set of leg curls 60lbs for 50 reps. One set of leg extensions 40lbs for 50 reps. One set of leg adductors 70lbs for 50 reps and lastly, one set of leg abductors 60lbs for 50 reps. And the reps are all done fast. And if I can, I go skate outdoors once a week on a 7 mile route, again, more-or-less to work on muscular endurance.

It's funny cause the way I got into bodybuilding was because I started coming to the gym to work legs to help me with my speed skating. What's funny is that I found out later I didn't NEED to train my legs heavy for speed skating. So there for a while I was training legs heavy til I found out it was actually HURTING my speed skating so then I quit altogether. And I will also stop the weight training altogether again as I get towards the middle of the speed skating season. I am totally following my coach's advice this season so when he tells me it's time to cut out the weight training for legs, I will, cause I learned my lesson last season. So I actually just recently got back into weight training my legs at the beginning of this season (last month) previously I hadn't don't anything for my legs besides skate for about the last 6 months.

So in a nutshell, I don't do much training for my legs besides skating, so yeah, I'd give speed skating and genetics the credit for my leg development. :)

Thanks, i thought that may have been the case. I will ask the girl i train to start riding. I know from personal experience, when i used to race BMX in my younger years, my legs were veru strong and muscular. I stopped riding and started training like a bodybuilder and they actually started shrinking.

Thanks for the clarification:)

Okay Spatts, here are all the links. Oh gosh, please excuse the really retarded looking poses, LMAO!! I did not, and I STILL don't know how to pose correctly. So some of the photos look really retarded cause I was trying so hard to show the muscle, lol!

This first link is my pics from August 2001, 2-3 weeks into my serious cutting and after approx. 1 1/2 yrs of just lifting and NO diet. I calipered out at 19% body fat in these.

http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?selected=103586

The second link is my pics from November 2001, so 3 months of cutting.

http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?selected=95131

And once again, this third link is almost a year later (since I started taking progress pics), after 2yr 4mo of lifting and almost a year of trying to cut!

http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?selected=103456

So now, what does everyone think? Good progress?

I don't think I look like a different person but I am happy with the results I got. I started at 22% body fat right around 140lbs (beginning of Aug 2001) and in the most recent pics I am at 136lbs 15% bodyfat (5'5"). I purposely did it very slowly cause I did not want to lose any muscle and in fact I was able to gain muscle AND lose fat during the first 5-6 months! After that I had to cut calories to lose more. I also had several setbacks along the way, holidays and what not.

WoW!!!! Talk about inspirational!!!!! Very inspirational!!!

Great, now Bfold's gonna be hitting you up for training advice, asking you where he can get that blue outfit, asking if you will teach him to skate so his buns and quads will look like yours....

Eh, I don't mind, I love helping others with training and dieting. I do it pretty much all day long (jobless right now) on another BB board. And I really want to be a personal trainer for my career, just haven't got the $500 to get ACE certified right now. I'm hoping to get a job as a fitness trainer at this new Gold's gym that's supposed to be coming to town, get my foot in the door then I can earn the money to get certified.

Thanks again to everyone for such nice comments! It's nice getting them from the same people I've been coming here and admiring all this time. I come here a lot for motivation, you gals all look so wonderful, keeps me going. I've also referred several women here as well cause of the vast amount of knowledge presented here as well as all the very intelligent and experienced men & ladies that post here, you guys/gals are all great to take so much of your time to help others!

You look great - nice arms! So, would you say weight training has helped you overall with your speed skating? It sounds like the lower body training didn't necessarily, until you switched to more of an endurance workout, but has your upper body training helped? I'm always interested to hear how weightlifting contributes to an athlete's sport - both good and bad.

Keep up the great work!

I really haven't noticed one way or the other but my coach thinks that it has helped me so that I don't get knocked around very easily. Like if other skaters bump into me, it really doesn't do much. Conversely, some of the lighter women get really thrown off when they get bumped into.

I guess the only other things I can think of that it may have helped me is one, in relay races. You have to push your partner so obviously it's an advantage if I have a strong upper body with which to propell my partner down the floor, lol. And I suppose it may also help with my sprinting cause the coach is always stressing how important it is to swing your arms especially when you start getting tired cause when you swing your arms your feet follow. So If I have a strong upper body it would help me in that respect as well, probably help to make me a more powerful sprinter and when my legs start giving out, help keep me going.

Yeah, as it turned out I can't train my legs bodybuilder style anymore so I train legs sport specific and train upper body bodybuilding style. So far it's working out just fine. I'm glad too cause I really wouldn't want to give up lifting! Now the diet, yeah, would LOVE to stop scrutinizing everything I put into my mouth! Unfortunately that's not an option if I want to stay lean. I know you all hear me on that one! I love training and am one to easily push myself into overtraining but the diet, geez, I'd give that up in a second if I could and go back to eating whatever I want whenever! :D

Just for fun if anyone wants to see photos of me in action speed skating, here's a link to photos taken of me at the National Championships in Lincoln, NE this past summer.

http://www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?selected=99646

I am the one in the LC Speed uniform, navy blue sleeves, blue and gray helmet, and purple skates.

I made all my finals and ended up getting 5th overall. I'm hoping to be in contention for a medal next year. This past year was my first year competing in Standard division. Previously I had raced in the Junior Olympic division which is basically a beginner division and placed 2nd in the Nation which kicked me into the next level which is Standard division. I race against other women in my age group, Classic Ladies division ages 27-34.

Thought I'd give a little more info since some of you seem interested. :) And I sure love talking speed skating just as much as I do bodybuilding. :D

Wow...you look wonderful! It's great to see pictures of you skating...you must really enjoy the sport. Good luck competing! I luv the little tatoo too, it's cute!

For some reason, I thought you were skating on ice.

Yeah, I'm used to that though. 99% of people think ICE when I tell them I'm a speed skater. It's just cause inline skating isn't as well known, yet. It's gonna be an Olympic sport in 2008 so hopefully that'll change. I'd like to see it get to the point where if I say I speed skate, people will actually ask me if it's inlines or ice instead of assuming ice. But a few of the olympic speed skaters DID get their start on inlines. Derek Parra was an inline skater who trained here in Dover with Virgil Dooley who used to be the inline speed skating coach for the Dover team. Virgil no longer coaches but I've talked to him quite a few times and he lets me do drill work in his rink (which is 10min from my house). Also, Derek used to train outdoors along the same road that I'm currently skating on! Pretty cool. :D

Thanks. Yeah, I really love speed skating. I want to go as far as I can in the sport. I'd like to get to the point where the sponsors notice me and start coming to me!

That's the tequila worm, lol, eh, it looks like it anyway. Either that or it also reminds me of that little inch worm on the Looney Tune cartoons, the one that chicken hawk is always trying to catch, LMAO! I love those Looney Tune cartoons, they're a classic! :lmao:

wondering how you can keep muscle -as you said-and lose the fat with all the cardio you do??

Yep, what spatts said. I don't do a lot of long distance work. Since I'm mainly an indoor skater, it's mostly sprinting. Outdoor skating is much longer. I do some of that too but not near as much as indoor sprinting. The other factor I would say with my not losing muscle with all the cardio is just genetics. I just seem to be one of those people who can do cardio out the ying yang and not lose any muscle over it. Cause I've done a lot more cardio in the past and never lost a pound. And, even in basic training with all the running I did, I actually GAINED weight instead of lost. Keeping muscle doesn't seem to be a problem for me as much as losing fat is. Diet seems to be the only way for me to get leaner.

I was wondering where you were hiding! Hadn't heard from you FOREVER!

Thanks!

Yeah, well I don't get on yahoo messenger anymore since we closed our supplement store down (long story). So I'm mainly just on bb boards now when I get time. :)

Thanks everyone! I really appreciate the comments! :)
