ebay is raising it's listing fees

SAN JOSE, Calif. - Some small business owners who reach most of their customers via eBay Inc. expressed anger Thursday at the online auction giant's plan to boost the monthly fee it charges sellers by 60 percent. Its shares lost nearly 4 percent.

EBay outlined the increase in a terse e-mail on Wednesday to all buyers and sellers, including small business owners who hawk clothing, electronics and other low-margin commodities.

"It seems as though the larger eBay becomes, the more greedy they become," said Lynette McDonald of Alton, Ill., who has sold Barbie and baby clothes on eBay since 2001. She says she may close her eBay store entirely because of the fee hikes or raise prices she changes buyers.

Starting Feb. 18, eBay said the monthly subscription fee for people who operate "Basic eBay Stores" will increase from $9.95 to $15.95.

The fee for a standard listing of 10 days will double, from 20 cents to 40 cents.

"This site used to be a place where one could get a good deal," McDonald said. "Now that the starting prices on goods are higher to accommodate the growing fees incurred, there are no more deals to be had."

Such reactions underscore the popularity eBay has achieved with small business owners who can't create their own Web sites or operate a traditional bricks-and-mortar establishments. Peddling vintage china, handmade sweaters, classic cars and other collectibles on eBay generates supplemental income for senior citizens, rural Americans and others who live far from commercial hubs.

EBay spokesman Hani Durzy declined to discuss how the price hikes would affect revenue at the San Jose, Calif.-based company, which reported sales of $805.88 million in the first three quarters of 2004. The company will report fourth-quarter earnings on Wednesday.

"We believe the price changes are the right thing to do to ensure the continued success of the marketplace," Durzy said. "Ultimately that's good for the entire community of buyers and sellers."

The changes, combined with eBay's dominance in the auction and online payment sectors, prompted some members to ask whether the government or a fair-business consortium should regulate fee structures so small-scale entrepreneurs don't get gouged.

"Yes, it is a free market and sellers can take their business elsewhere, but there is very little competition for this style format," said Artie Klawans, an art dealer in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

EBay shares fell $4.12 to close at $103.13 on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Its shares were at a 52-week high of $118.42 in December.

i sell on ebay and prolly will be cutting down more now. they're making it too tough to list the little shit and make ANY money from it anymore :(

Good news for Overstock.com and their recently launched auction service!!!!!11

go overstock go overstock go

i listed something on overstock at christmas and got less than 5 page views. i had an identical auction on ebay running at the same time, along with yahoo, and sold the ebay listing for $37.50, 12 bids and over 100 looks. the yahoo auction also had less then 5 views. the overstock auction DID get me about 20 emails from other sellers wanting me to join their friend network, wtf!? overstock sucks ass right now

overstock would do far better, if they had a way that every auction submitted on it's site -- would get placed automatically on ebay. Of course you'd have to pay ebay fees -- but more people wind rather get their auctions placed on two sites for the same price, then one.

never go against a tiger fighting fist to fist. you'll never win. they need to be more creative to take down that goliath.

Bastards! Fortunetely I dont have a store there, used to. I did 6 transactions on egay yesterday for about $500.00. Pay next months house payment with it.

As far as these fees..........fuck the greedy corporate fuktards! And the prob with other auction services..........you cant get hits. And ebay knows that so basically there bending us over the barrel cause they can. And those fucking paypal fees!

And this isnt the half of it-------Dickpecker Cheney just announced the reason for our poor economy #'s are the millions of us raking it in on ebay and not reporting it. Imagine 8% tax on top of it all! And you know this is bullshit--but here goes bushco creating another "crisis"....If they say crisis--that means it's bad for them and good for us.

Fuck the feds and there unconstitutional tax system--ive done close to 100k on the net and they can blow me.

Heh bro--neither can I! LOL. Ive been selling on the net for over 10 years so the annual $ doesnt equate to a pile of shit. The deals I did yesterday--a machinist had these spare parts for $75 each and couldnt get rid of. I knew I could and talked him into all of them for $25.00 each +had him hold them for me till I sold them. Go to estate sales and auctions. Kinda slow this time of year though+im not getting around real well now. Like before my accident i bought a lather for $5.00 sold 4 $350.00 and an atlas metal shaper for $25 and sold for $550.00. It just comes and goes, when I see a money maker I pounce on it.

I like overstock's chances. They are just getting started on the auction side and their CEO is brilliant. I've talked to women who have spent thousands on their normal website with the discounts. Someone has to emerge as a worthy competitor eventually in auctions, no monopoly can last forever. Just the fact that you even listed it on overstock at all tells me something, cool. It's valued at $1 billion, while Amazon and Ebay are sitting at $17 billion and $75 billion respectively. Makes me give it a long hard look that's for sure :)
