Early Infection?

Tom Treutlein

New member
I had an arguement with a friend about HIV and early infections. If you have intercourse with someone, and you're afraid they may have HIV, when could symptoms first show? Is it even possible they show 2 days later, literally? You know, the early infection flu-like symptoms...?

That's what I always heard, but after a lot of arguing I was getting skeptical. The scenario was two people engaging in sexual intercourse as a one-night-stand kind've thing, where people don't know much about the other's past. Then the example of early symptoms came up. Mind you, this actually occurred with someone in my family, which is why we got on the topic.

In any case, the family member in question was sick with flu-like symptoms on Wednesday, after engaing in the act on Monday. Mind you, this was also all during flu-season (transition from Fall to Winter kind've time), so it could've been anything. Paranoia has a way of affecting people, though, and that I can understand. So, the whole fever, swollen lymph nodes in throat and sores on tongue pointed towards early HIV infection symptoms. It snowballed into a whole dilemma from there.

At least you talk about HIV....even though some of the information was wrong. Do a search on the net for more information about HIV/AIDS...then you will know more about transmissions.

I would almost never contridict BBB on here as he is so knowlegleable, but flu like symptions can (but not always) follow initional infection of HIV. I can point out the time of my infection because the doctors though I had Leaginalla and was quaritined for a time at the hospital although when the test came bakc it was wildily out of synch for either a pos or neg reaction to the water borne bactiria. Some people also spick a temp upon initial infection. And in rare cases, people die from an allergic reaction from the introduction of HIV in their bloodstream. Willie Smith, the first major black fasion designer in the US died from an allergic reaction to his initinal infection of HIV, so it can happen. Again, I almost never want to contridic BBB because of his personal struggle and vast knowlede in the subject, but this is what I know. Thanks to all of you who have made me get an upgrade on elietfitness from HIV and AS Mentor to the new role of Moderator. You folks were great in voting for me, and if I can be of help in my new role, please feel free to write directly to me. At least I don't hide behind a handle on here - I could never get away with that anyways - I am just too well know in the area where I live. Peace and good health to all, Alan Chiras.

I want to Thanks You for your "trust" in my knowledge. I am not a Doctor, and I do not claim to know everything . I thinks it's great that you have helped with this concern. It will after all, take everyone as a collective to help those who aren't sure about HIV/AIDS , understand it.
Congrats on making Moderator..... ;)

Another topic that was debated at a different time (and one that I've been curious about since) was the lifespan of some with HIV but who is taking medication. I hear all upbeat information from people with it saying you can live a normal lifespan (60 to 70+ years) so long as you take your meds and do so at the right times. Is this true, or just a bunch of overly positive hogwash? Obviously it's highly individual, but is a long life possible?

What if one caught the disease within its first year of initial infection (i.e., got tested and found they had HIV after 10-12 months and started meds)?

Finally, I remember back in highschool they had someone come in who had HIV that had to take 20+ pills a day. Was this just an attempt to scare us, or is that how it really is? Granted it differs from person to person, how much do people need?

My cousin aquired the virus in the late 80's and is alive and well living in Hawaii. Mostly asymptomatic and only takes AS and Marijnal (takes them because he likes being ripped and getting stoned).

He has always lived a clean diet and maintained his health WELL before he was infected. I dont know the details of his Tcell counts etc. But he has only been sick about once a year with the flu, JUST LIKE THE REST OF US:)

I know VERY little of HIV/AIDS and his case is unique as I understand it. My disclaimer being that my only exposure is with my cousin.

I dont talk about it to him as he is self concious. But read what I can. I only recently asked him about meds and a few other questions, which I was able to pry due to our mutual affinity for AS's.

He does take lots of antioxidants and basicly lives off fish, veggies, and fruits.

His sexlife I dont know about, and getting sick while infected can come from sex, AS I UNDERSTAND IT. Meaning exposing yourself, unsafely, to say chlamydia or ghonorhea which is NORMALY very treatable can be difficult for someone whose immune system is challenged.

I too am VERY interested in the new med protocols for HIV treatment/management.

Ill be honest, this is more interesting than any threads on the other boards. Who cares how much Dbol Craig Titus took in 1997 compared to such HUMANKIND issues like this.

Thanks for bringing up these questions.

And thank YOU guys for answering them as candidly and informatively as you have.

Ben
