DVD Vs VHS Which is Better...Really especially for rental?

I have bought a new yamaha surround sound and a dvd player for my mitsubishi tv and mitsubishi vhs. And while the dvd looks and sounds good it messes up all the time and usually at exciting parts of the movie. It just seems to me that rental dvds are not going to work because the general public gets a chance to put their greasy french fry eating hands on the disk. So to me the vhs rules as far as dependability and the dvd is better sound and picture when it works. But since they are both for entertainment seems like you would rather something not look quite as good but work imo. What do you think?

Oh btw for you technically inclined. What happens it your watching the movie and all of sudden both the dvd and the surround sound turn off leaving a blue screen on the tv. I thought it was a short but it happens at the same place in movie when you try to watch it again. I mean I never got to see if John Q tried to shoot himself or not. Any ideas?

I am talking about the movies themselves not the machine.

So am I. Judging from how badly most people treat their own discs, I don't see how a rented DVD could last more than a week without getting nicks and scratches.

I no longer own a VHS player.

Since BlockBuster recently removed 35% of the tapes to make room for more DVD's, I'd say DVD.

I prefer the option of skipping all the shitty previews at the begining instantly and I like being able to bookmark scenes with a DVD player.

Oh ok we are on the same page. Exactly.

Skipping/freezing also depends on the quality of your DVD player. I have a $80 Apex DVD and a Sony surround sound w/DVD. Rented movies w/ nicks and scratches never play on my Apex but I can watch them on my Sony. I think it has some to due with the quality of the laser on the player. As for renting, I used to prefer VHS but now that I got the Sony I prefer DVD.

Sounds like a player problem. As with the guy above, I have no problem with rentals on my Sony. But Yamaha make good players, so you might just have a faulty machine.

The only time my receiver has shut down like that (never the dvd player), was one time i had a couple of strands of speaker wire touching and a very loud part of a movie happened. just trimmed my tardy work away and all was well again.

I think you are right. And now they want me to bring it back to conn's so they can send it to their service dept. How the heck are they going to find an intermidant problem like that? I am screwed.

You also have to make sure the dvd player is getting enough air circulation. If it starts to get too hot, it will freeze and cause probs. This is what I heard from someone so I'm not sure f the validity of it

I have had only 1 problem with a dvd from blockbuster out of dozens rented. vhs sucks ass, they take up more room, you have to wait a lot longer to skip around movies, there's no extra features either like on dvd. they're only good for recording tv shows cheaply, and dvd will soon replace that as well.

I only rent DVD's, I like the added footage, also if I ever have a problem with skips, I just take it back to blockbuster and get another one.
