You're probably not hitting it in the same place on the muscle as you do on your left glute because of flexibility, etc. Use a full-length mirror and see exactly where you would hit your left glute. Try flexing your ass muscle in the mirror so you can see the 'belly' of that muscle. The belly is the most massive part, farthest away from the tendon/ligament portion of the muscle. Should be the upper outside quadrant of your butt cheek.
Whatever the case, see where you're hitting it on your left in the mirror and then try to hit the same corresponding spot on your right. Sounds like you're right handed and you're hitting too high on the right because you're more flexible.
I'm a glute-only guy, tried quads and literally couldn't walk for a couple of days. Delts bled all over the place and hurt like a bitch. Maybe I'm just a pussy...
