Does Sitting In A Sauna Raise You Basal Metabolic Rate?

JUICESEEKER

I was wondering since sitting in a sauna makes you sweat, if it is actually raising your metabolic rate, therefore burning more calories?

he's probably right, becuase your body wants to slow down to maintain homeostasis...as most body functions, enzymes and what not are impaired with temperature shifts

You guys are wrong, it raises your BMR. Your body burns excessive amounts of calories as a result of the thermoregulatory mechanism and its desire to maintain body temp.

That is why we sweat, and this process utilizes a great amount of energy.

actually no, check it out. if your bmr INCREASED, it would RAISE your body temp. do you think your body would raise its temp when your soaking in 105 degree water? your main thermoregulatory mechanism for overheating is sweating, and sweating takes energy away. this energy is in the form of heat and thats why it cools you.

your body lowers its bmr to maintain homeostasis when overheating.

if you want to burn more kcal, go sit in a freezer lol.

basal is good.

i like it best on some a fresh italina baguette with olive oil and some provolone cheese. sliced roma tomatoes and kalamata olives and you're really cooking.

lol @ Satch :D

Sitting in sauna should lower your BMR,
and staying in the cold (slight) should raise it.. *don't know if noticeable at ALL*.. since when cold your body ups your MR to keep ya warm..

Sorry dude, not true! Look it up, energy metabolism and thermoregulation in humans!

I understand it may seem to make sense both ways however, trust me I am right, I have a degree in physiology and have done a ton of metabolism research!

It kinda makes sense both ways. I know that when your body is cold, you burn shitloads of cals. The only time when I had to use weightgainer is when I did some work scuba diving. My body burned soooo much cals, just trying to stay warm, that if it wasnt for the weight gainer i feel i would have wasted into nothing (this is Canadian water remember ... not florida).
