Does insulin need to be refridgerated even before you start to use it?

I was just wondering if I should refridgerate insulin right when I buy it or if I wait till I start to use it? Will it be bad if it has sat around unrefridgerated but not opened?

Humalog must be refrigerated prior to and during use.......I believe that's the brand you said you were using, right?

I am going to be using Humalin-R. I couldn't get ahold of Humalog. It didn't feel cold when I got it from the pharmacy but I didn't see where he picked it up from.

Humulin-r is ok at room temp. till opened.
Humalog is OTC in Canada, all of 17 bucks....got any friends there?

Wish I could say I did. Looks like I will be usin this humalin-R. Another thing I wondered is can you take glucose tablets right after your shot instead of simple carb drink? or are those for emergency use if ya get to start feelin crappy? Also the drink of 15 minutes after shot is SIMPLE carb right? Combonations of simple and complex type sports drink won't cut it as well?

insulin

"Humulin-r is ok at room temp"

no it's not. I have been a diabetic for 17 years and have ruined my share of 'slin that way. I know it was ruined because after my injections, by blood sugar levels would keep rising and never come back down. Never, ever leave insulin out of the 'fridge for long or it will be a waste of about $20.

Humilin-R, as Hi-Fidelity said, must be kept refridgerated....this is vital....I am also diabetic and have also ruined Insulin by not refridgerating it...and when using, take it out from the fridge about 15min before your shot so it is not injected too cold....mostly a comfort thing

hi and mark...so you are saying that even before it is opened it has to be refridgerated? I know it must be refridgerated after the first use just like GH but it has to be refridgerated before you open it? It was not cold when I got it from the pharmacy. (So its bad and I should throw it away?) Sorry if I'm bgein redundant but I wanna make sure before I dump it.

Crimson...has it been in the fridge since you got it....my pharmacist allways keeps it in the fridge and when I get it it's not extremely cold but cool...it should be refridgerated before being opened...as to throwing yours away....it's hard to tell if it's gone bad or not...no of days out of fridge, what temperature it's been stored at, etc...

then how come in monsters anabolic primer it says u can preload a syringe and bring it to a gym and keep it in a cool place and then use it and it wont go bad, i was under the impression that u can take it to the gym as long as it stays in a cool place not for too many hours, many bbuilders practice this, i would preload it, put it in my gym bag, and use it 2 hours later tops

Humm. Well, CC...I would defer to these diabetic bro's on this, as cheap as the stuff is, no point in taking chances. Been a long time since I used anything but humalog, but my pharm did not hand over the "R" cold....like yours, it was cool but not refrigerated.
Boys, if insulin is bad, how does a non-diabetic know? Does it make you sick, or just loses effectiveness?
CC, I have found that a combination of complex and simple carbs works best. The stuff that is all glucose is in and out so fast, that I still got hypo., esp. with the longer acting insulins. Endurox seems to work real well, Cell-Tech is ok with fast stuff, not so good with "r".

Help Please!

I just started humulin r. i can NOT keep it refrigerated. The room temerature is around 70 degrees, and the instructions that came witht the slin said it was ok to keep it unrefrigerated as long as it was below 86 degrees. I can refrigerate it right before injections, but thats it. Will my slin still be good? Please tell me yes, and someone tell me some more info on this. I assume that all will be ok, but please let me know. Thanks.

People with insulin pumps walk around all the time with UN-REFRIGERATED insulin both in the pump and sometimes a "spare" bottle with them. If you're using the insulin rather quickly(within a month), refrigeration is less of an issue. For those of you on BB'ing doses, short periods at room temp are fine but store it in the fridge.
