Carisoprodol is the precursor to meprobamate, a strong and addicting sedative agent which itself was used as a sedative/hypnotic in the 1950's before being supplanted by the safer benzodiazepine class of anxiolytic drugs.
The onset of action of carisoprodol is within 30 minutes; its half-life is 8 hours.[4] In one volunteer study, 9 out of 10 adults given 700 mg carisoprodol had peak serum concentrations reached within 1 hour.[8] In one patient the half-life was 6 hours. Within 2.5 hours post-ingestion, meprobamate levels exceeded carisoprodol levels in the blood. Within 6 hours in 9 out of 10 subjects, 92% of drug was present as meprobamate; in the 10th subject only 35% was present as meprobamate (slow metabolizer).[8]
