Does anyone here cycle?

GT make a good mountain bike. You need to spend money to get something pretty decent with mountain bikes. The low end stuff is shit. If you don't have the money, you're better off getting a decent make second hand, then buying a new low end make.

If you are just riding around the city and only hitting the trails once in a while I wouldn't spend more than $500. Less of a kick in the balls if it gets stolen too.

Stick some road wheels on there, knobblies are a drag on the street.

San Fran. That's some hilly shit.:D

If you are using it mostly on road then full suspension is a disadvantage, you'd be much better off with a hardtail.
A cheap full sus bike will have shit components to make up for the extra cost of the frame, and a cheap full sus frame will be shit anyway. You'd be much better off with a quality hardtail with a decent frame, some ok forks and good components for the same money.
Listen to the advice given, get something from a quality brand like GT, Specialised, Kona, rocky mountain etc, even if you have to buy second hand, it'll be worth it in the way the bike rides and handles.
Jeep make good 4x4's, but since when did they know shit about bikes?!?!?
In answer to your question, in my opinion definately get something else.

Stu.

GT went bankrupt. They no longer make bikes.
I race mountain bikes, so feel free to PM or email me, i'll hook you up with some good info.

oh and for the love of God, DO NOT buy that JEEP bike. Never, ever, EVER buy a bike from anywhere but a bike shop. They're put together but zitfaced skids that don't have a clue how to put them together. When you buy from a bike shop, not only are you guaranteed to get a real brand and good components, but you'll get the satisfaction of knowing someone who's career and life revolves around bikes put your together. Plus you'll probably be getting 1 free year worth of tune ups, something Sears or whatever will definitly not offer.

I would highly recommend that Specialized RockHopper you're looking at. Probably has all shimano LX components which is definitly all you'll need, plus Specialized's cranks and other components are decent, so are their frames. They're made in Thailand, but unless you're doing huge tricks, that'll be fine.

He's right about the tires, pavement and those knobby tires don't do well together. Pavement will wear them out fast. I f you can get an extra set of wheels with different tires, that way you can go trail riding and street riding.

i bought a mongoose... it was "low end" but the guy insisted it was a good bike... it has shimano shit on it which he was adament about.... and the tires are a hybrid so its good to go on pavement... i dont plan on being considered a "real rider" just now and then for fun and peace.

Dr Bollix is right - helmet and reflective wear are essential, even when it's not really dark.... and pedestrians somehow think you can go through them and it won't hurt...

I used to have a RockHopper. Awesome bike. Make sure it doesn't have gripshifts though, they suck in my opinion. Back then I upgraded to Deore XT components, SPD pedals and a couple other tricks. I used to love mountain biking, then it got stolen. It's like getting your right nut cut off, masterbating is just not the same.

But Specialized are great bikes for the price.
