Do you think the US postal system should be privatized?

Since the price of stamps are going up on monday and the US Post Office is the most unefficient run government agency known... I would love to see it privatized however 45% of the people would be laid off and it would create a tremendous burden on the wellfare system from all of the slow mail clerks applying for wellfare.... Discuss

The price of stamps are going up again??? Damn that is the first I have heard of it.
Must be due to the price of gas going up for the mail trucks....

That is just crazy..eventually everything is gonna be nice and pricey due to this damn gas increase

As of 2005 Western Union Telegrams ceased due to the competetion from snail mail , email and cell phone usage..... They had been in business since 1805....

mail is going to be something of the past before long I would bet.
I think the only thing it will be used for is big boxed materials, but even then there is ups and fedex.

I agree with privatizing -- but must be careful that stringent regulations aren't set that promote a monopolistic or oligopolistic industry. That will bring us right back where we started... enabling competition, and the affects of supply and demand will really help define the future of our communications industry.

You could let FedEx and UPS enter that category of mail at the same time.

Right now, those guys can't compete (by law) with the USPS in letter mail.

Actually competition would be great in this instance due to the fact that it would force the competition to lower prices and provide better service....

I agree, that's exactly what I'm saying....

We need to ensure that privatizing doesn't result in a monopoly or oligopoly where competition is stifled. Sorry if I worded that wrong.

You are correct.... because lord I love standing in line at the post office for an hour mail something when the line is lined out the door and they have 1 person working and 4 on break......

I friggin hate going into the post office to sign to pick up packages. HATE it.

10 times yes

And they can just charge $1.00 for stamps for all I care, I thought we were all "paperless" now anyway

I think it should...however I disagree that it is the most retardedly run federal program.

There are a few others that take the cake on that one.

We need more automated machines at the post office. We finally got one here and it does everything. Makes those lazy bastards behind the counter obsolete.

IMO we should privatize it but I will tell you postage costs will go up. The organization will be more efficient but it is far from profitable and they will need to jack up rates.
