Do you have a phobia?

Bizarre or otherwise?

Interested to know how people deal with theirs so feel free to share.
I personally define a phobia as an 'irrational fear' and I've got a couple myself..one of which is pretty bizarre.
I hear methods out there that claim to eradicate the problem, but maybe I'm to skeptical or chicken shit to try them. I'd rather just avoid if possible.
That being said, I did have a severe phobia of drowning as a kid to the point where I could only take showers and not baths. But I overcame that when it actually happened...ended up getting a swim coach and now can't get enough of swimming.

Spiders.
I would rather deal with a room FULL of Tigers, rattlesnakes and bears before I would approach 1 spider. No fukkin way.

I am allegrophobic.... It's fucking annoying, and I apologize to Smurfy in advance for the future annoyances/minor freak outs that she will witness....

Do any of you think the problem stems from something you experienced/witnessed at an earlier stage in your life or is just one of those things that happened to be?

This must be pretty exhausting cos you can't really avoid those no matter where you are..
Does size matter in your case?

I've been claustrophobic my whole life. Totally freaks me out to be in a tight space; I'm talking total irrational panic.

When my son was 3 he went into a habitrail type amusement at Sesame Street Place in Philly. My wife and I never saw him come out and I had to go in after him. It took 2 tries but I was finally able to calm myself and focus. Went through the entire thing and he wasn't there. Turns out he didn't like it either, went back out the entrance and ended up in the lost kid coral.

I don't have any that I know of. There are things/places that make me uncomfortable but no irrational fear of them.

Cheers,
Scotsman

okay, if any of you laugh, i'm going to magically appear before ur eyes and kick your ass..really hard!

ok, crickets.

if youre outside at night they can sometimes jump on you. just sayin

EXACTLY!:worried:

i don't like any kind of jumping bug/critters, that includes freaky frogs!

i will admit that i freaked out once....or twice as response to a poor little mouse. it was horrible. poor little bastard.*shudder*

I'll be right here, do you want me to leave the door unlocked?
Do I need a snack :taco: or a drink:coffee: for the wait?

If it's war you want then it's war you shall have!!!

No booby traps especially not with mice, they are just vermin like cockroaches that need to be dealt with in the home. We really don't have a lot of crickets up here in Denver, or frogs for that matter.

Only squirrels that fly and befriend moose.

You're afraid of being late and being stuck behind a little old lady on the freeway with her turn signal on?

Don't think I've ever seen one,if I have I didn't know...I just hear 'em all the time

i would drop dead waaaaay before this thing reaches me.(i think its a cricket?)http://s3.amazonaws.com/readers/2009/03/09/cricket_2.jpg

what about grasshoppers?

what's the difference? one is a morning hopper and the other is a night one. actually i don't mind the little green grasshoppers that i am able to see in broad DAYLIGHT. i like to go hiking, camping, trail rides, ect, and they hop away, minding their own business.

then its nighttime, and they're terrifying! its okay if i'm not alone, otherwise i do a pretty good job of freaking myself out.

heights and snakes

although i don't mind heights on roller coasters or something where i'm restrained/suspended

looking over a balcony or something where i can fall freaks me out

They're actually not bad.

OH MY GOOD LORD! thanks for the image!

pics of you eating protein rich crickets.

BTW guys, this how scotts got his big muscles. the elitefitness.com secret(crickets). therefore i encourage you all to go out tonight and gather all the crickets around and dispose of them.

I'd just flick it off.

However, you just wished your big phobia on me. I'd never wish my phobia (traumatic amputation) on you. :(

u have been jumped by a cricket before? how do you know you won't completely lose it and start running in circles screaming and cursing the poor things to everlasting hell?

i never thought about amputation. although i'm very grateful i have a perfectly functional body, i'd rather live with no limbs than lose my senses(worse than T.A IMHO). i'd think i'd be just fine if i can still feel, smell, taste, hear and see.

Do you fear one over the other?

Locked-in Syndrome, a condition wherein the mental facilities remain intact but most of the body is paralyzed.

Having the bathroom door locked during bath/showers. Drowning in the tub is a big problem for me. I had an older sister, who as a small child died this way. I never left my kids alone in the tub when they were little the fear was overwhelming. Now they just can't lock the door. :)

I have a phobia of mice, snakes, and planes crashing in my presence.

I'm not afraid of air travel, but I dream about plane crashes all the time. I will probably die from a plane crashing into my house lol

I have mild claustophobia....not mild because the symptoms are mild, but mild because only a few things trigger it.

Example: super thick wetsuits with the hood attached, I can't do anymore. The hoods are really hard to get off and they are so constricting. The last time I was taking one off I almost had a panic attack when I couldn't get the hood over my head.

I also get the claustrophobia panic when I am in really crowded places (where you can't avoid bumping into people or them bumping into you). If there's no easy route to fresh air, the panic will just slowly build and build (for this reason I get almost all of my xmas shopping done online or before thanksgiving).

I'm also somewhat arachniphobic, but it's not AS bad as it used to be.

Size ALWAYS matters.:verygood:

But yea. For some reason, I'm ok with tarantulas. I have owned 2, a mexican red knee and a rose-haired.
My problem is with normal spiders.... and my problem is SEVERE. I have my house sprayed twice as much as the exterminator says I need and I am careful about where I park my car(NEVER under trees). I still find spiders in life. My friends and family laugh because it takes me a few days to enter a room if a spider had been spotted there... and thats only if someone kills it. If I see a spider in a room and someone doesnt kill it because it hides or gets away(yes, I have had friends DRIVE to my house just to kill spiders), I WILL NOT go back into that room until I forget. Sometimes it takes months.
I have a vivid memory of spiders in movies from when I was a kid. Maybe ts from that but I'm not sure.

I am kinda the same from being a paramedic. Every single time my son gets close to a damngerous situation(standing by stairs and so on..) the what-ifs keep replaying in my head for hours. It totally freaks me out. Sometimes, it will pop back into my head when I am trying to sleep and I get soanxious, I can't sleep.
