Do you have a deck and what is it made out of?

Wood, composite material? Trex Deck? The type from Home Depot or Lowes?

I'm planning a deck with composite lumber. Just wondering if anyone else has exprience with them. Pros and Cons. I'm really not considering the wood decks and would like info on the composites if any.

I have a vinyl fence and it's holding up pretty well over the years. I definately like the fact I don't have to stain it every year or so.

The decks I'm looking at are Premier... WeatherBest... Weathertech.

A!

Mines wood. It was already there when I bought my house.

I just have to keep it watersealed yearly.

Good luck on erecting your deck

Trex sucks. As someone who works in commercial lumber I'm extra fussy about composite decking. I have it though-- LP weatherbest in the cedar color.

It was really yellow at first but now it's faded down in the last year and looks stunning. We had all solid cedar lattice panels (not just lattice tacked up but inset into cedar 2x2s with a dato). It's a beautiful deck!

And my decking was red tagged as a return so I got $800+ in decking for all of...$120. Yeah! My brother in law bought the rest of the material to buy the deck for us as a wedding gift.

I have a Florida room sitting on a slab, much more pleasant than a deck. Mosquitos around here chase off hummingbirds.

PT treated Douglas Fir, "Yella wood"

Before water sealing.

Don't mind the wood on the chairs, it's the bar top. You can clearly see the tint from the water sealer. I used the "clear" but it added a little color.

Great, you know your stuff. You guys sell the Weatherbest where you work? I would never get Trex or the HD stuff. I just started researching and it's looking like Weatherbest, weathertech, Premier are really good choices. I considered IPE but it's just not for me. I want as little "upkeep" as possible.

Is there anywhere I can get prices on these things? Every website has links to distributors or something... I'm doing app a 16'X20' deck. I really have no idea of what they go for, just a ballpark figure would help. I did see somewhere that an 8 foot railing was $200 from Premier. That does'nt sound bad, IMO.

Maybe I'll post pics of where it's going for some feedback, ideas.

Yes, but that's the worst view of it. Maybe that's why I'm changing it. lol

Small fucker, huh?

where do you live?

Can we check the inside out?

I can't talk shit mang, I rent.

Trex Deck, veranda etc

cons

1.It’s expensive
2.tennis shoes/boots will leave hard to get out scuff marks
3.If it chips or scratches it’s like $17 for a 16 footer replacement.
4.It’s not very appealing compared to wood in my opinion, I think decks should be wood; it’s a summer outdoors thing I guess.

Pros

1.low maintenance
2.last a long time

NJ. Here's some pics. Did a whole house renovation. Just finished the basement. I'll post pics of that at some point. I'm not sure if you've seen my basement gym... Everyone else has. lol

Thanks, it's like night and day. i wish I owned a camera before I started. My sister frequently came by and video taped the whole demolition and rebuild of the house on a full tape and a little of another tape and accidently erased the full tape. Very upset at that, because people just don't believe how the house was before... Anyway... Thanks again.

Don't know if this applies to you but from what I've been seeing on a bunch of houses I've been painting (all <5 years old) they seem to like the fiberglass decks because they don't rot, etc...dont' need painted. But IMO they look like complete shit. The color is this is this light gray and it looks horrible. My parents have a wood deck and it looks 100x better

The newer decks are better than the older Trex deck stuff. These links

http://composatron.com/photogallery.asp

http://www.timbertech.com/products/color.asp

Show the colors (Cedar is nice) and just how durable they are. The second link has a side by side comparison on the site of how much MORE the wooden decks will cost with yearly maintenance. I'd rather have little maintenance and cheaper lifetime cost.

I do agree that the Home Depot stuff looks pretty bad. Even the display ones they have which should look good... DON'T. They are cheap and plastic looking.

There were 2 sets of steps in the back and I got rid of the one on the right. I'll be knocking down this one as well for the deck. There was a door on the left and I moved it for the french door location. That should go right out onto the deck.

This would be the view of the backyard from the deck/french doors.

Yes, on my apartment. It's concrete and needs repainting. The good things are it's pretty big with a walkout from both the living room and master bedroom. Damn neighbor kids are always outside and loud as hell so I rarely get to enjoy it.

Yes. I have a wood deck patio that was here when I bought the house. My dog has been eating it though. Tremendous jaw strength. I think he's juicing behind my back.

You've recently stopped that stuff, has he been in your garbage? hmmm.

I found some empty syringes in the trash. He must be sneaking in here while I'm at work. No way his bite can be that strong naturally.

I was going to take a pic today at the house I was at, GL, for you to see after it had been aged abit but I realized I don't have the lil cable for my camphone (and I aint payin the 10 bucks a month for storage they offer). But anyway leave it that I thought bout your situation today while at work :D

The decks I have now, all are made out of wood.
But when I have to go and change the wood, I'm going with composite this time. It's suppose to last a life time. Little more expensive but then you will not have to go back and change the bad wood.

I think your doing the right thing.

My deck is pretty sweet. I just used regular ole cdx(axl or whatever the hell u call it now) as it's a pretty common thing around here. It's a double decker. The lower part is about 30'x6' with a 12'x10' square attached to the middle, only 1' off the ground so no railing was used. Then off the 12'x10' lower section is a set of stairs that goes to the upper deck which completely wraps around the front of the house in a U shape and then turns 90 and goes over the top of the 12'x10' part. The upper is 10'x16' 90 to 20'x8' 90 to 40'x8' 90 to 10'x8' and drops down on the other end with another stair set.

Originally this was a wrap around porch that needed replacing and the upper deck took it's place and allowed 2nd story excess on that end. I have all 6x6 support, 20 in all, 6 alone on the 12'x10' section to support an upstairs hot tub with a roof over just that part.

I designed and built the entire deck, the only help I had was calling in farmer joe with his tractor and auger so I could make quick work out of dropping posts. Which I strongly recomend over pouring 12" x 3' deep footings and placing your post on top of that with a bracket. This deck isn't going anywhere.
