Do most used car dealers take cash only?

I'm talking about cheap used cars like < $5K. I'm trying to help a friend buy a car long distance and I can't get my head around a dealer not taking a debit/credit card. I don't want her walking anywhere with that much cash and having a cashier's check made out beforehand limits the negotiating.

I'm not paying for the car, bitch. Stay on topic.

they take CC and debit.... if they don't keep looking.

That was my take exactly. I can't do business with somebody that isn't organized enough to take a debit card. She found a car at a place that doesn't take them. I say hit the road. The problem is her current car is dead and she's in a rental until she buys..so every day she has less to spend.

Because if you buy the car, then dispute it with the credit card company - it's additional headache and time wasted over a measley $500 profit. And risk losing the entire balance, and you still keeping the car. Not worth it. I don't know of any dealers that do.

True but can they do the same with debit cards?

If they wont negotiate and give you time to go and get the money then they are shady and yopu need to move on. I hate car salesmen about as much as mortgage brokers. they both have honest people in them but a lot more shady people.

I bought a used car for $15K once; paid $7K with a debit card (which was the most the bank would process at once) and the rest with a check...no problems.

I think they make exceptions if it's for "partial" payment (?)

credit card companies/transaction companies charge like 2.5% fees and other fees to dealerships. the dealership has to include that fee when you buy the car with a credit/debit card or eat that up and that takes away from their profit.

most people rather lease now than buy a used car.
