1st post here--So a little background. 6"1 205 34y
For the last 18m prior to October I was not working out, not active and ate 2 sometimes 1 meal a day. My waist went from a 34 to 36 all the Fat was in my gut. Since october I have been reading the boards and tring to fix my diet. I started eating more food and hit the weights. I lost 1 inch off my waist but stayed the same weight.

I still have a little bit of a gut now. I would like to gain some mass. I have just totaled today diet and to my amazement ate only 1700 calories 141/120/53..pro/carb/fat. I thought that I at twice that( or at least I felt that way. I have been putting on weight since starting to eat like this 2 weeks ago but Its seems to be on my gut.

Soooo I'm thinking man my body must be screwed from the bad eating habits. From what I have been reading I should eat 3000 cal a day just for maintnence. I don't understand this. I should still be losing weight. Is my metabolism still sleeping?

Can anyone help with a suggestion to get on the right track is. I am afraid that if I increase to 3500 a day to bulk My gut will get much fatter?

sorry for the long post

if your waist measurement has went down but the scale hasnt that would suggest that you have gained some muscle and lost some bodyfat... at 1700 calories your metabolism is sleeping. Your body thinks there is a famine, so everything you eat, basically, turns to fat... YOur body actually thinks it is doing you a favor by doing this. The thing is you have to trick your body into believing there is no famine. This is done by 6-7 small meals a day.
Maybe because I just woke up, but I dont know if you want to cut or bulk. Here is something that can help. To maintain your present weight you would have to eat your body weight X'S 15. iF you are 205 that would be 3075 calories. To lose weight substract 500 from that numer... Then, of those calories 50% of those calories should come from protein, 30% carbs, 20% fat. Those numbers can then be adjusted as needed later.

What type of calories are important also. Have you learned the right foods to eat? If you post your diet, there are plenty of diet junkies here that will be happy to offer suggestions... Let's see what you got.

ccc- I would like to bulk for the next 12 weeks at least and then cut for summer.

In the gym train every part once per week on a five on two off ( was doing whole body 3x per week and 2 days of cardio) hey I'm learning.

8:00
2 pack oatmeal
3 eggs w/cheese
8 oz oj

10:00
triple threat shake (334 cal, 2g fat, 19g carb,60g pro)

12:00
gym

1:00
post workout shake(will add this week)

2:00
Hamburger or chicken
salad w/ 2 egg whites

4:00
can of tuna

6:00
same as 2:00

9:00
same as 4:00

I belive this is about 2400 cal,260g protien,140g carb,70g fat.

I just totaled this now and it looks like I still need some more cals. Any suggestions. I am finding it hard to eat all this and it looks like I need to eat alot more. ( remember only used to eat 1 or 2 meals a day)

Isn't this is the general formula for BMR

66 (6.23X weight in pounds) + (12.7X height in inches) - (6.8X age)

so 66+(6.23x205)+(12.7x73)-(6.8x31)=
2042 calories

now with some moderate aerobic activity everday, say about 20-30 minutes a day and you should lose 1-1.5 pounds of fat a week. So him eating 1700 calories a day, is not some starvation thing at all

This month's Muscle & Fitness

Is dedicated to nutirition. It will give you a complete guide to caloric needs based on body type and goals. Also good back routine and arm routine with Coleman.

To maintain his present weight (205), he would need to eat 3075 cals. So I figured to cut start by deducting 500, and make sure macronutrient ratios are appropriate. If you are that weight and you only eat 1700 calories over one or two meals this would result in fat gain. Plus, it would result in a lowering of his metabolism.
If I remember my nutrition class from college, your body needs something like 800-1000 just to breath and carry out involuntary functions, so 1700 cals for a now active adult male seems low to me.... I definately dont know everything so excuse me if I gave some incorrect information. Perhaps someone can help with this. I can however say that this formula works for me and others that I have given it too.
And to bulk you would take your weight X's 20, again has worked for me in the past. BUMP to diet gu-rus

I i believe i quoted the standard formula for BMR, Me personally is very close to his stats, im 6'0 220lbs, and my current diet is about 1700 calories a day spread over about 5-6 meals, i workout with weights about 3-4 times a week and cardio about 3 hours spread out over the week, lost inches on calves, thighs, waist, gained on chest, arms, lost 10 pounds weight over 5 weeks and have gained muscle at the same time, maybe 3-4 pounds
