Did I miss out on a good deal?

Today, at a Target (dept. store like wal-mart) parking lot, some dude stops me and offers to fix the body damage on my truck. so I tell him to meet me at the end of the parking lot. I had already asked someone that was into auto body and had quoted me around $2k-$3k, but that was with replacing some "skins". the damage is on the driver's side of my truck, someone had rubbed in to the side of it and drove off. I wasn't there at the time so I couldn't do anything about it, and I don't have full coverage which is why I haven't gotten it fixed yet. also on the passenger side, the wuarter panel is dented way deep for riding on this wall that had lifted up the front corner of my truck. so back to my story...

the guy takes a gander at the damage, and told me he would fix my truck 95-100% for $380. he had said he has the boss's truck and tools so he could do it right there. he said he would do a section and if I was not satisfied, he would not charge me and would leave. well, I had told him that I was out of a job and would be able to come up with the cash immediately, so I had asked for a card. I then asked for a business card, and he had said that he has the boss's truck and that it is not often he is out with it and his tools, saying that he does body work on the side. after being denied a business card, I had asked for a phone number where I could reach him at at a later date, and again he came up with the excuse with having his boss's truck. THEN he had dropped down the price to $280. I still stood by my word, and he declined. I didn't feel suspicious until he had denied me for a business card. my truck is in tip top shaope mechincally, and the body damage isn't THAT bad, but did I miss out on a deal?

there has been a lot of these mobile body damage repairers coming out of the woodworks here in southern california and from the looks of things, they seem to be the next white van with specials on the bomb ass home theater speakers.

you made the right choice. better to pay a little more and have some sort of accountability with a garage than some dude on the street. there are way too many crooks out there.
