Dextrose/protein source

Dextrose = pure glucose monomers, it doesn't get absorbed into the liver to form liver glycogen. The liver loves fructose, most of it is absorbed through the first pass. This is bad, as it packs on fat (coenzyme A levels rise?). Since we want muscle glycogen for lifting, having the liver suck up all the fructose and leaving minimal amounts for the muscle is inefficient. Also fructose is special in a way that it can transport itself through cell membranes without using insulin (we use postworkout sugar for an insulin spike).

A pure glucose monomer can bypass the liver, thereby increasing the probability of filling muscle glycogen and not have the macronutrient turn into fat :).

Well that's my 2 cents.

Maltodextrin is a polymer of pure glucose...or a polymer of dextrose. It has the same GI and perhaps the same insulin index as pure dextrose...although it's not as sweet and probably more expensive. Dextrose is a nasty sweetness...it tastes like icing sugar, hell it looks like icing sugar.

Yeah, but thats not what gatorade powder is, it's a mix of dextrose and sucrose. Maybe you're thinking of the bottled gatorade, I think that's mainly fructose.
 
Go to sam's or somewhere like that and it is even cheaper, limited flavors, but you can get a huge jug of powder 3x that big for the same price as the big cardboard one in the groc store...
