Define "Hooking Up"

People tell me they hook up all the time. Unless there is no set standard for what hooking up is I do not understand what they mean by hooking up. I feel foolish asking what they mean by saying they "hooked up" but I really dont know. Im guessing they dont have actual sex but is it everything but...just kissing...Please give me some insight..

Hooking up for me has always been just kissing and maybe a little more...not sex. For me, sex is sex. I guess I got used to using the term "hooking up" in high school and after to mean 'everything but sex' because I did not sleep with anyone in high school.

that has endless meanings. why does it matter? unless the the recipient of the conversation comprehends the context of the saying, then that is all that matters, right?

Hooking up means anything from kissing to fucking. Its very vague. You need to ask if she hooked up "hardcore". If she says no, then she probably just made out with a bunch of guys. But most girls I know lie about hooking up hardcore so good luck.
