counting carbs?

I am currently dieting to loose some fat for spring break i was wondering should i count the carbs from veggies such as broccolie, spinach, salads or be more concerned with carb count from oatmeal and brown rice?

also what kind of bread is good to eat when dieting? besides whole wheat bread ,multigran bread good? early in da day?

i wouldnt count the carbs in your green veggies as most are fiber, but to your second question i dont think any bread is a real wise carb choice when cutting, but if so whole grain or whole wehat is the best choice for you.

Unless you're going on a keto or Atkins-type diet, there's no reason to completely eliminate carbs. Just stick to the low-GI carbs, and keep them limited. For bread, multi-grain is best. Your oatmeal and brown rice are fine too. Just watch your portions.

you and gymrat are wrong-veggies count as carbs

For what it's worth, when I was doing the adkins diet, ALL carbs were considered, including vegetables.

Doofy, IMO you should measure your portion sizes w/ broccoli spinach etc. Buy the stuff that comes in a bag with the nutritional info on it. For example, if it says 20g of carbs and 10g fiber, subtract fiber from carb amount and that is the amout of carbs you are taking in at that time. Forget the bread when cutting

Doofy - you also need to keep this matter in relative perspective regarding your ENTIRE diet....it is highly unlikely that you could be eating TOO many vegetables....you have to eat SOMETHING and if you're cutting I think choosing green fibrous veggies over bread is the best way to go.

Give yourself some time to learn how many carbs your body can handle and still stay lean....it might take YEARS for you to learn how to adapt your eating....but I don't think it's very wise to eliminate any one food, or be overly concerned about counting carbs. I think it's a pretty sad day when people are worried about eating too many vegetables.

So eat reasonable amounts (and I realize it may be hard to define "reasonable") but use your common sense and instinct. Five cups of brocolli at one sitting is going overboard - but having a cup or two at a few of your meals is not going to hinder fat loss...

You have to establish a daily caloric intake and then base your meals around that - so if you eat a large amount of veggies one day, you may have to compensate by NOT eating something else...

:/ i was looking foward to eating lots of veggies :/ pfftt
Go for it man! Especially greens. The average g's of carbs in a serving of green leafy vegies is like 4-7g - hardly anything! When cutting I build my whole meal plans around eating lots of vegies - fills you up, healthy, tastes good. Then I eat my other foods (small portions) and feel truly satieted. Nice balanced info there from Stryc-9 too!

If you stay completey away from the rice and bread and grain-based carbs, then no, I wouldn't bother to count the veggie carbs. If you are male, have a decent muscle mass and workout once in a while, they would be pretty academic.

If you start to add grains, then YES - you're going to need to start considering the veggie carbs.

If you MUST have bread, Wonder Bread Lite Italian has only 7 grams per slice after fiber is subtracted. When on maintenance, I make french toast with no-carb syrup once a week for a treat.

Also, Tortilla Factory makes 2 gram tortillas (after subtracting fiber) - makes a good breakfast burrito with eggs, cheese and bacon. Try http://www.synergydiet.com if you can't find them in the local health food store.

If you add grains, you should also start considering your dairy carbs too. Eventually, they can all add up.

And the amount of carbs you can eat and still lose weight depends on your muscle mass and ultimately on your activity level. I'm a small woman, so I need to keep mine extremely low to lose and even kind of low to maintain, depending on whether I'm working out regularly. Guys seem to be able to get away with a higher carb intake.

its what works best for you..but for example..i have been increasing my green vegies and find that i am fuller for longer. Today for lunch i had chick breast and 2 cups green veg...had to force myslef to eat something 3hrs later..NEVER happened before!

i think the pros outweigh the cons...

count veggies that are NOT green... they have higher carb counts...

those that are dark green... lettuce, broccoli, asparagus, etc... are low
in carbs and are mostly fiber which is not absorbed anyway...

i ate these all fiber crackers... all fiber and no other carbs... I ate
50 grams a day of them and never got kicked out of ketosis...

What are these crackers you speak of?????

They are called just that "fiber toast" and "fiber cracker"

they are 6 grams of carbs... all fiber... they taste like shit
alone but with some butter or cream cheese they are great.
for people on low carb diets its perfect since they are allowed
butter and cream cheese

Doofy...

the last ones I bought were "bran Crispbread" 3 grams of carbs,
all 3 fiber... I bought them at an all natural food and supplement
store on 3rd avenue between 34th and 35th street.

great... they are Scandinavian bran crispbread - suitable for diabetics....
when you walk into the store.. they are in the aisle on the right side...
near the front...

Coz - you ever try FiberOne Cereal? I think it's all bran, no sugar. RB recommended it. Wondering if anyone else has tried it.
