ok i always hear it would be beneficial to take ALA before morning cardio b/c it will help shuttle all the little glucose that remains int he bloodstream, what i dont get is doesnt ALA have no effect on insulin levels. if this is true, how does it help clear the glucose from the blood stream??

It upregulates GLUT-4 receptors, effectively giving insulin more effect on blood glucose levels.

Don't take it before morning cardio. Have you ever almost passed out from low blood sugar? It's not fun, and won't help to increase fat-loss in my opinion.

I would have to agree, hypoglycemia is not a fun thing. Symptoms of it are: Rapid onset of altered mental status (you are suddenly very confused as to what is goin on), intoxicated appearance, staggering, slurred speech, rapid pulse rate, cool, clammy skin, hunger, headache, and seizures. If you just happen to take some ALA and "forget to eat carbs" or run on a treadmill and you start to go into hypoglycemia, then immediately stop and put some honey or syrup underneath your tongue. Or, you can suck on a peppermint. This will put sugar in your blood stream reall fast which will keep you from fainting.

Hypoglycemia will definitely depend on how much you are taking. As previously said, on an empty stomach before cardio you want to be careful. Wrestler had a great suggestion about using honey of offset the hypoglycemic symptoms. For safest bet, if you take ALA on an empty stomach you should probably be relatively inactive.

personally, I have not met many people who experienced dramatic hypoglycemia as the blood sugar effect is pretty much limited to what occurs at 600 mg. More ALA than this typically does not increase the blood sugar lowering effect. As well, you can go into ketosis rather quickly with ALA and this will provide a pretty stable supply of blood sugar.

however, be careful as everyone has said.
