Desktop is the way to go. I have both a PC and portable, but like the portable because of ease in use on the road and in the office. Get KILLER work done on boring ass flights overseas, and can watch a dvd if I want, or record a cd. The power and output rivals most PCs now. Even gamers can get a good laptop and get good graphics. But you will pay more for the portable of course. I have a gateway 5300cx solo. Great system.
It depends.................if you NEED portability then definately get a laptop. Otherwise get a desktop as you pay about 3X more for a comparable laptop-if you can FIND a comparable laptop. Most times the top of the line laptop is about 6-8 months behind the desktops in processor speeds and HD space.
talonracer, true, but who needs a 1.5 gig cpu and 80 gig HD? unless you are a number cruncher, coder, or graphics hog. most people will never use that much horsepower. But i just have become a portable fan due to ease of taking from point a to b
A big con against notebooks are that they are almost impossible to upgrade, so you're pretty much stuck with what you have.
If you have the computer skills to do so, you can built one from seperate parts. It's really cheap that way, but its not for everyone. I did it though.
