I am running XP.jnuts said:Did ya format it?
Are you running XP?
How do I do that? Very, very rusty with BIOS etc. Never did get good at anything there but screwing up my computer.Paulo said:Hey,
go to manage and then do a quick format of the drive.

Seems to be properly set up but I don't see a way to format it.
Right clicking gives these options:Paulo said:Oh yeah, after that,
go to 'storage',
then disk management.
You should see your hard drives there
Right click on the new drive and goto 'format'
I usually do a 'quick format' if it is a new drive.
Saves a lot of time
Paulo
Apparently XP does not offer the format option despite some strong efforts here.Paulo said:While still in the manage screen, go to action in the upper menu bar. Click, and there should be format there.
p.s.
What is the status of the hard drive in the manage screen??
Testosterone boy said:BIOS acknowledges the existence but I canot figure a way to format it.
I tried to download different drivers from western digital. The download would not complete the write to my floppies which are 4 years old.
Seems that the floppy/drivers that came with the HD may be designed for HDs over 137GB. Perhaps explaining the $30 plus $20 rebate offer?
It came with a floppy but I am unable to do anything at all with it. There is no setup function or anything remotely related to it. Seems like a big trick to me.TC2 said:
did the hd not come with software?
I got partiton magic if you want it.
I have no idea if my original hard drive is FAT32 or NTFS. The computer was built in 2001, purchased new on 12/01.jnuts said:Greetings!
<Start>
<Run>
type "diskmgmt.msc" then
<Enter>
You should see a drive either with no letter assigned, or a letter assigned, but unformatted.
<Right-Click> on the drive's icon, and choose to format.
You may be prompted for a choice between FAT32 or NTFS.
Choose whatever matches the format of your first drive to keep troubleshooting down to 1 drive format.

Yea....I was able to bring it online there, however there was no format option. I was not prompted for a choice between FAT32 and NTFS.jnuts said:Greetings!

It is a 120 gig HD. Good idea to check with seller and see if that could be an issue.jnuts said:
That's odd. The only thing I can think of is that you'll need to fdisk that drive.... but our shouldn't have to in XP or win2k
Maybe you need to check your motherboard manufacture and see if there is an issue with your bios and having a hd > 120 gig
Good night and good luck
I have to go into device manager and then disc drive to find it. There is still no letter assigned to it.Paulo said:Hey,
I use XP, so that is why what I was saying should have worked. When you were in Manage, what letter did the new drive have?
If it showed up in the manage screen, then it should have given it a letter. If not, you can assign it a letter.
I would set your 120 to Cable select. And is your main drive at the end of the line?
And BTW NTFS is the one to use.
FAT 32 is for ancient shit.
Following jnuts instructions in diskmgmt.msc, I find that it is online. Shows 11.79GB unallocated.Paulo said:Does it give a status of the drive?
Yes it does. Says it is online and all GB are unallocated.Dial_tone said:If you rightclick My Computer, select Manage, then click Disk Management under Storage does it show the disk there?
Format is not availablr as an option. Wish it was.Blade66 said:when you are in that diskmgmt.msc thing, can you right click on that new hard drive and select format, and then select NTFS?

Testosterone boy said:I have done it before, it should be simple. Installed a 120GB hard drive as the slave to my master.
Went into BIOS and set up automatic configuration for the new hard drive. Windows says that it is correctly installed BUT.......it is not acknowledged in the My Computer area.
Unable to do anything with the floppy, it is western digitals data lifeguard tools.
I wonder if I am out of IRQ addresses for this new device? I have installed a few peripherals.
WTF
Alrighty, I am presently formatting it.jnuts said:
Dude, I think it's a BIOS problem.
Based on this link

and this link

Note, I'm not sure if that BIOS update is for your mobo or not. It might be, but I'm not sure.
