Computer will not acknowledge new hard drive...

I have done it before, it should be simple. Installed a 120GB hard drive as the slave to my master.

Went into BIOS and set up automatic configuration for the new hard drive. Windows says that it is correctly installed BUT.......it is not acknowledged in the My Computer area.

Unable to do anything with the floppy, it is western digitals data lifeguard tools.

I wonder if I am out of IRQ addresses for this new device? I have installed a few peripherals.

WTF

I really don't know how computer guys keep their sanity, they aqre quite frustrating in my opinion.

Did ya format it?

Are you running XP?
I am running XP.

How can I format something that my computer does not truly acknowledge?

format c would format c......my master.

My computer has not assigned a letter like c or d to this new hard drive.

Me no can help you as I don't have XP... but I think it's similar to how Win2k does it:

START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL - ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS - COMPUTER MANAGEMENT

Disk Management it should show your harddrive - you mount and format it ther.

Oh yeah, after that,

go to 'storage',

then disk management.

You should see your hard drives there

Right click on the new drive and goto 'format'

I usually do a 'quick format' if it is a new drive.

Saves a lot of time

I found it under computer management. jnuts directions worked quite well.

Seems to be properly set up but I don't see a way to format it.

Right mouse click on the picture / grey bar that is the unformatted hard drive - select format.

Right clicking gives these options:

update driver.........no results here

disable

uninstall

scan for hardware changes

***no mention of format possibility***

Ya got me there. XP must be a bit different than win2k. I'm guessing it's somewhere on that screen... Right click around there like a mofo.

While still in the manage screen, go to action in the upper menu bar. Click, and there should be format there.

p.s.

What is the status of the hard drive in the manage screen??

Apparently XP does not offer the format option despite some strong efforts here.

May go into BIOS and try there dammit.

BIOS acknowledges the existence but I canot figure a way to format it.

I tried to download different drivers from western digital. The download would not complete the write to my floppies which are 4 years old.

Seems that the floppy/drivers that came with the HD may be designed for HDs over 137GB. Perhaps explaining the $30 plus $20 rebate offer?

did the hd not come with software?

I got partiton magic if you want it.

It came with a floppy but I am unable to do anything at all with it. There is no setup function or anything remotely related to it. Seems like a big trick to me.

Yes...I would like partition magic if you think that would help. :)

Greetings!

<Start>
<Run>
type "diskmgmt.msc" then
<Enter>

You should see a drive either with no letter assigned, or a letter assigned, but unformatted.
<Right-Click> on the drive's icon, and choose to format.

You may be prompted for a choice between FAT32 or NTFS.
Choose whatever matches the format of your first drive to keep troubleshooting down to 1 drive format.

I have no idea if my original hard drive is FAT32 or NTFS. The computer was built in 2001, purchased new on 12/01.

What were they mostly selling then?

no,, no, no - ya don't do that to the original drive, you do it to the NEW one. NTFS or FAT32...either one will be fine for you, though NTFS is a better option

Yea....I was able to bring it online there, however there was no format option. I was not prompted for a choice between FAT32 and NTFS.

That's odd. The only thing I can think of is that you'll need to fdisk that drive.... but our shouldn't have to in XP or win2k

Maybe you need to check your motherboard manufacture and see if there is an issue with your bios and having a hd > 120 gig

Good night and good luck

My original hard drive is working with NTFS.

I am considering a reboot to see if anything magical has happened. Takes this thing a few minutes though.

I may chew some McAffee tail instead. Thye left me with an angry abortion when I tried to uninstall their damned virus program.

It is a 120 gig HD. Good idea to check with seller and see if that could be an issue.

How can I fdisk a drive that has no letter like b or c or d attached to it?

Hey,

I use XP, so that is why what I was saying should have worked. When you were in Manage, what letter did the new drive have?

If it showed up in the manage screen, then it should have given it a letter. If not, you can assign it a letter.

I would set your 120 to Cable select. And is your main drive at the end of the line?

And BTW NTFS is the one to use.

FAT 32 is for ancient shit.

I have to go into device manager and then disc drive to find it. There is still no letter assigned to it.

Main master drive drive is C.

CD ROM is D

CD-RW is E

Flashcard assembly/reader is F

Does it give a status of the drive?
Following jnuts instructions in diskmgmt.msc, I find that it is online. Shows 11.79GB unallocated.

Still no drive letter assigned.

I'm frustrated, I need to go jack off for a bit.

If you rightclick My Computer, select Manage, then click Disk Management under Storage does it show the disk there?

when you are in that diskmgmt.msc thing, can you right click on that new hard drive and select format, and then select NTFS?

Yes it does. Says it is online and all GB are unallocated.

Calls my master drive a drive 0.

Calls my new slave drive a drive 1.

Nothing worse than buying a big fat new HD and finding out your mainboard won't support it...

......what is this craziness you speak of?

Dude, I think it's a BIOS problem.

Based on this link

http://www.powerspec.com/systems/archives/system_components.phtml?component=438&selection=8420

and this link

http://tw.giga-byte.com/Motherboard/Support/BIOS/BIOS_GA-8IDML-C.htm

Note, I'm not sure if that BIOS update is for your mobo or not. It might be, but I'm not sure.
Alrighty, I am presently formatting it.

At first I chose the smallest partition sizes...about 8 MB. Then it said I had a 8 MB disk drive.

I said WTF and am reformatting it with the largest partitions available....about 112 MB I think.

Strange things...these computers.

So what is better....smaller or larger partitions? I would think that perhaps smaller partitions would be better though 8 MB is really, really small. Shoot.....a picture of my wand of destruction takes at least 8 MB. a joke...ok

jnuts and paulos and other who tried to help, this is what worked: The new disk showed up as disk 1 (vs disk 0 for the master) under disk drives. Right clicking in the white space to the right gave the option of partitioning. This was followed by the option of formatting.

You told me to right click but that was before I found the more comprehensive data for the drives that was needed.

Wish I could explain this stuff better.
