at the end of the file it says Xvid.dvl.avi

what does the DVL stand for

sometimes you have to play around, depending on the format, WMP, Winamp, or Divx player will play the file best (least jerky/video won't fall behind audio)

Play around with the settings of your player. Download the Klite codec pack , comes with BSPlayer and try playing the movie with BSPlayer.

Otherwise, it sounds that the quality of the movie is poor and there isn't much you can do about it.
