Whats the fastest speed that a download can go at on a 56kbps modem? (Theoretically, is it 56kbps or is it much slower than that?)

Theretically, 7 kilobytes a second. More realistically, it will be between 3 and 5.

56kps is a misnomer. You will never attain that speed on a 56k modem line as there are too many variables such as noise on the line. The highest speed I've seen on a 56k modem is around 49-50k and even that is unlikely.....

fastest Ive ever seen in even the best lab conditions was around 42 ...that was with all new wiring... close proximity to the box.

Reason I'm asking is that I just got a download on kazaa which it said was going at 45kbs for a good minute.

Is this kilobits or kilobytes then?

Ohashi, What makes you say 7kbs theoretically?

I had a friend who told me the same thing a few years ago, but i can't remember what his reasoning was.

53.3kbps is the fastest a 56K will connect at. That doesn't mean you'll ever a download at 53kbps. You won't. There is overhead involved with the connection. Also some of that is alloted for uploading. The fastest you'll see an acutal download go is 5-7kbps. To compare, I connect at 3.3Mbps on cable and the fastest download I've seen was about 700kbps.

Your highest speed will never exceed your slowest component.

You could have a 56k modem and downloading from someone with an OC3 that resides ON the back-bone and still get no better than 50kpbs.

I guess you are talking about p2p. I measure download speed capitical by commerical websites that consistantly give a wide open speed download. You can really measure by p2p since you down know what the other people are capable of giving you.
